Ciara, Freak Me [Photo Credit: Beauty Marks Entertainment]Continuing her musical return, Grammy-winning urban contemporary artist Ciara drops her second single of 2018, “Freak Me,” featuring Tekno.

After deciding to “Level Up”, R&B singer Ciara returns with her second single of 2018, “Freak Me,” featuring Tekno. While the title isn’t exactly unpredictable, there are lots of pros regarding the record.  First and foremost, the production is unique, particularly the mallet parts.  “Freak Me” is fueled from a sample, “Before NKO.” Sample or not, “Freak Me” benefits from it strong production work, blending tropical pop, reggae/dancehall, and urban contemporary.  Give JR Rotem the credit he deserves behind those boards.

Known more for her vibe than her vocal prowess (no shade), the same can be said of Ciara on “Freak Me.” She has a nice, pleasant voice – cool, calm, and sexy in this particular instance – but it’s not ‘the second coming.’ Nonetheless, this approach is fitting for a script that the urban contemporary artist has embraced throughout the course of her career.  Yup, sex tends to work out well for C, and more of the same occurs on “Freak Me.” There are some great, smooth vocal harmonies, and the sexiness is potent.

Final Thoughts

Honestly, there’s not much to say about “Freak Me.” It’s respectable, but definitely not a game changing record.  Is it memorable? It’s okay, if a bit on the ‘lite’ side of things.  Call it what it is – effective enough.  Again, there’s an issue with cooler, urban dance-pop artists with truly connecting and packing a punch with their audience/fan base.  That’s the case here with “Freak Me” which is good, but certainly not transcendent.
