Alternative trio Chvrches returns with “Never Say Die,” the third single from their forthcoming album, ‘Love is Dead.’
Lauren Mayberryand alternative trio CHVRCHES are back! The alternative trio returns with “Never Say Die,” the third single from their upcoming album, Love is Dead (May 25, 2018). “Never Say Die” commences with rhythmic synths. Mayberry serves up clear vocals with no frills on the verse, but highly effective. Also, notable on the verses, Mayberry is never forced to fight the production, always in command. On both verses, there’s a catch-line that recurs: “Didn’t you say that”
Mayberry steps up her game on the dynamic pre-chorus /chorus. Even though she’s more assertive, the production also grows. Sometimes, the production, epic nature aside, overpowers a wee bit. That said, the energy of the record during this section is highly appreciated. Notably, the reappearance of the aforementioned catch-line from the verses is a great touch, delivered in call and response. It’s essentially Mayberry delivering the call, with pitch-shifted vocals dropping the response.
Final Thoughts
The biggest selling point of “Never Say Die” is its exuberance. Set in a major key, this is an alluring, bright, energetic cut. All in all Lauren Mayberry and Chvrches seem to be on an upward trajectory with Love is Dead… even if that doesn’t sound quite right considering the album’s title…
