Sometimes it is the unlikeliest of collaborations that work out the best. Alternative trio Chvrches enlists the vocal talents of Matt Berninger (The National) on “My Enemy,” the second single from their upcoming album, Love is Dead (May 25, 2018). “My Enemy” commences with an enigmatic intro.  Essentially, a killer vibe is set. Throughout the record, theirs is excellent pacing – thoughtful use of space and contrast, both vocally and instrumentally.

Matt Berninger enters the picture first, showcasing his distinct, magnificent vocal tone.

“In the moment you could be honest, you could wake up, up

But your jealousy is more blind than luck.”

Chvrches frontwoman Lauren Mayberry completely contrasts the softer, subtler vocals of Berninger with more piercing, spirited pipes.  She does so on the chorus, the centerpiece of “My Enemy.”

“And you could be my enemy
And you could be my judge
If you could start remembering all the time that you used up
And you could be my remedy
If you could show me love
If I could stop remembering all the time that you used up.”

More intense electronic production work follows on the post-chorus, which is instrumental, before the return of Berninger.  The sentiment is similar to the first verse.

“In the end, we did all the damage that you could want, want
But the emptiness will go on and on.”

Once again, Mayberry contrasts with more youthful, bright, and ‘optimistic’ vocals.  Both join forces on the final chorus. Mayberry is the dominant voice, but Berninger blends well in the background.

Final Thoughts

Chvrches and Matt Berninger make sweet music together on “My Enemy.” Excellent production, fantastic vocals, and terrific songwriter should tickle any listener’s fancy.
