Chris Young, Losing Sleep © RCAChris Young showcases his sensual side on ‘Losing Sleep.’ Even so, the country star keeps it classy.

Chris Young wants the world to know he has a sexy side.  Sure, there are plenty of female fans on the Chris Young bandwagon, but literally, he wants to showcase that sexy side.  At least, that’s what can be inferred from his new single, “Losing Sleep.” The question is, why is the country singer losing sleep? Here’s a hint – it’s a universal, three-letter word.

Initially, “Losing Sleep” could be mistaken for a pop song.  The production on the verses isn’t typical of the country sound.  This is what tricks pop listeners who normally wouldn’t embrace country music.  The lyrics match the sensual, pop-oriented sound:

“Light a candle / Turn all the lights down low / Baby, let’s just lose control, lose control…”

While the status stylistically might be in limbo, Young’s voice remains firmly planted in country music, yet adaptable.  That rich baritone that so many country males lack is intact and effective as always.  As far as the countrified nature of the track catching up,  by the chorus, He ensures his faithful fan base is covered.  The anthemic sound of contemporary country returns with its full-fledged glory:

“Fall into me, let me breathe the air you breathe / I can take you anywhere you wanna be / When it comes to us every single touch is something special / When we’re wrapped up in those sheets / Yeah, we’re winning, we’re losing / When we’re losing sleep.”

Final Thoughts

Okay, here’s the 411.  Listening to the chorus specifically, “Pillowtalk” came to mind.  No, Chris Young wouldn’t dare be as profane as Zayn, but it’s an interesting if coincidental parallel.  As for the song itself, leaving “Pillowtalk” out of the picture, is it successful? It’s okay.  The much more sensitive, lighter verses versus the gargantuan, countrified chorus is a bit of a tough sell. Still, Young has a compelling voice, and there’s something here, even if “Losing Sleep” is imperfect.
