Ah, it’s time to get cozy and totally cover up! So, what’s the premise of COVERS? In COVERS, we highlight a musician or band covering songs by another musician (likely a popular musician). COVERS separates itself from a related column, Head 2 Head 🗣️, because it only highlights the musician who covers, not the original/most famous performer. In the 4th edition of COVERS (2022), 🎙 Chris Stapleton delivers a compelling rendition of 🎵 “I’m A Ram”, originally performed by 🎙 Al Green.

Chris Stapleton, "I'm A Ram" [📷: Sound / UMG Recordings, Inc.]Covering the music of 🎙 Al Green is a tall task, PERIOD. Green is among those musicians who you can characterize as once in a lifetime.  That being said, a skilled musicians can give an Al Green cover a shot.  🎙 Chris Stapleton is one of the true bright spots in country music, with his talents transcending beyond the musical genre.  That is why it is totally NOT far-fetched that Stapleton covered the Green classic, 🎵 “I’m A Ram”, from the 1971 masterpiece, 💿 Gets Next To You.

Stapleton has the skill set to deliver the goods on “I’m A Ram.” His voice, first and foremost, is incredibly expressive and nuanced – filled with grit and soul 💪.  That is a big reason why the original by Green is so awesome – soul, soul, SOUL! Furthermore, Stapleton and his co-producer, 🎛 Dave Cobb, masterfully recreate the simple yet potent, rhythmic backdrop. It is not a copycat mind you, but successfully keeps the essence of the original alive and well.  Stapleton, naturally, gives this a bit more of a countrified rock flavor, and it sure is delish.

If 🎵 “I’m A Ram” were not already a hit by someone else, you could argue Chris Stapleton delivered a spirited original.  His interpretation of this Al Green classic is authentic – you can tell he put his all into it, as he does with his originals. “I’m A Ram” will always belong to Green but Stapleton deserves credit for a sensational cover.
