Up-and-coming Los Angeles DJ trio Cheat Codes enlists rising pop artist Kiiara on an enjoyable new single, “Put Me Back Together.”
Sometimes, you have to work as a team. That’s exactly what Los Angeles, California DJs Cheat Codes do. Cheat Codes don’t just employ one DJ, but three – Trevor Dahl, Kevin Ford, and Matthew Russell. To date, arguably the trio’s biggest hit is “No Promises,” which features Demi Lovato. That’s big. As they continue to build their brand, they drop another single, “Put Me Back Together,” featuring up-and-coming pop artist, Kiiara (“Gold” and featured on Linkin Park’s “Heavy”).
Focusing on Kiiara first, in the past, I’ve been skeptical. “Gold” and later single “Whippin” weren’t ‘homeruns’, but she showed more potential on her feature on “Heavy” as well as “Wishlist.” On “Put Me Back Together,” she is a great match to the music that Cheat Codes produce on “Put Me Back Together.” She excels in the electro-pop vibe, and furthermore, she has mad attitude. That attitude is fueled by profanity of course – almost the expectation in pop music these days.
Returning the focus to Cheat Codes, there’s plenty to love about “Put Me Back Together.” They blend more traditional pop (there’s some guitar and keyboard), with urban and electro-pop sensibilities. We get those hyped-up, hyper-rhythmic drums, exuberant synths, and the overall finesse of the EDM script. The boys don’t go too eccentric, serving up a well-crafted backdrop for Kiiara to paint her sometimes profane, but beautiful vocals on.
Final Thoughts
Lots of good things on “Put Me Back Together.” Cheat Codes serve up a winning production, as aforementioned. Kiiara exceeds expectations, building her case as pop’s next potential star, with compelling vocals. Maybe the best part of the record? A memorable chorus, sigh.
