L.A., Cali DJ and production trio Cheat Codes joins forces with British girl group Little Mix on their new single, “Only You.”
Los Angeles, California production team Cheat Codes are comprised of three different DJs: Trevor Dahl, Kevin Ford, and Matthew Russell. The trio, known for “No Promises” featuring Demi Lovato, delivered a stellar debut EP, Level 1, on June 8. As for Little Mix (Jesy, Jade, Leigh-Anne, and Perrie), since their 2011 inception, they’ve released four studio albums, with their most recent being Glory Days (“Shout Out to My Ex”). On “Only You,” Cheat Codes and Little Mix join forces.
“And no one else can fix me, only you.” Yep, “Only You” is about the aftermath of a break-up. Little Mix gets the party started, with Perrie singing the first verse (“Paris never feels the same, when the streets all call your name”), Leigh-Anne singing the pre-chorus, and Jade handling the first chorus. The excerpted lyric appearing at the beginning of the paragraph comes from the reminiscent chorus – “Once upon a time we had it all / Somewhere down the line we went and lost it.” On the second verse, Jesy gets her first action, singing alongside Trevor of Cheat Codes. The result is respectable vocal chemistry by all means, as well as welcome contrast. Dahl remains onboard for the pre-chorus (joining Leigh Anne) and chorus (with Perrie, Jade, and Leigh Anne in various capacities).
Final Thoughts
How does a Cheat Codes/Little Mix collaboration work out? Ultimately, very well. The singing from Little Mix and Trevor Dahl is a bright spot. The production works well, mostly conforming to pop with the emphasis on vocals, but incorporates dance successfully as well. This isn’t the type of record that’s going to change your life, but it’s enjoyable.
