Country musician Chase Rice returns with “Three Chords & The Truth,” the promo single for his third studio album, Lambs & Lions. 

Ah, the last time we heard from Chase Rice was back in 2016.  Rice dropped a single, “Everybody We Know Does.” Typically, a new single suggests a new album, but it wouldn’t be until 2017 we heard from the country/ Survivor finalist again.  He returns with his third studio album, Lambs & Lions (September 29). “Everybody We Know Does” is nowhere to be found, but “Three Chords & The Truth” asserts its role as promo single.

Among the pros of “Three Chords & the Truth” is the sound.  Chase Rice doesn’t shy away from country music, unlike some of his contemporaries.  There is no aim to win over the new-country audience.  The guitars are turned up here, not the synths or drum programming.  This showcases a more traditional sound – at least in the context of contemporary country.  Vocally, Rice delivers a proficient performance.  No shame in his game as far as the game plan.

As for the song itself, it’s okay, but not thrilling.  The script is kind of predictable. Rice checks-off boxes for sure.  He falls in love with a girl, young lovers believe they’re “bulletproof,” and ultimately “All I need is you.” The lyrics change, but the M.O. is the same.  How many country songs have been written with the same sensibilities? Lots.  Lyrical variations add church and the hymn “Amazing Grace” into the mix, etc.  It plays to its base, but it doesn’t evolve the base or expand the audience.

Final Thoughts

All in all, “Three Chords & The Truth” is okay, but not great.  The Chase Rice fan base will be rock solid with it. Those who look or more range in country music, not so much.  Still, working in Rice’s favor is his eschewal of the gimmickry of new-country.  Still, “Three Chords & The Truth” just isn’t as interesting as its title suggests.
