Let the dazzle begin!

“Even if it goes sideways / Even if we scream out enough’s enough / I believe that we’ll always find a way to weather the storm.”
Oh, the dedication is turned up to the nth degree! The fight for love, through even the most turbulent storm, is legit! Grammy-nominated singer, songwriter, producer Charlie Puth collaborates with Grammy-winning R&B singer-songwriter Coco Jones (Courtney Jones) on “Sideways”.  The result is a dazzling duet for the ages! “Sideways” is the ninth track on Puth’s fourth studio album, Whatever’s Clever!.  Puth co-wrote the song with Jones and BloodPop®. Puth and BloodPop® produced it, with orchestration courtesy of Brad Ritchie.  Yep, you guessed it, strings are upping the ante!

The soulful music cues set the tone from the get-go, establishing this as an R&B/soul-pop joint. Charlie Puth draws first blood, performing the first verse. His tone is refined, and he never gets too high or over-sings during his performance.  “Maybe we took a wrong turn / Yeah, we just had to let it burn,” he sings, and adds, “You didn’t need to slam the door, oh.” Following the verse, Puth sings the pre-chorus (“This love means way too much /…For us to give it up”) and chorus, excerpted earlier. Coco Jones takes the reins during the second verse. She matches the sophisticated vocal performance of Puth. “The gravity is drowning me,” she sings, and concludes, “And I’m making up all these tragedies / Clarity comes to me, tellin’ me to slow down.” Jones performs the pre-chorus, with contributions from Puth, showcasing some of the first great duetting moments. Likewise, they collaborate during the second chorus, with both vocalists digging in more. There are some awesome vocal ad-libs and riffs. The interlude that follows is sweet, with epic non-lyrical singing from Puth and Jones.  Their final chorus is also top-notch, with the duo delivering incredible synergy. The outro finds both flexing their R&B vocal muscles. Ultimately, Charlie Puth and Coco Jones make a formidable duo on “Sideways”.  Both deliver high-flying vocals separately and collectively.  This marks another enjoyable moment from the ambitious, diversely assembled Whatever’s Clever!.
