British pop standout Charli XCX and South African-Australian pop standout Troye Sivan ‘bring the heat’ on their feel-good, reminiscent single, “1999.”
Cutting straight to the chase, good things happen when a couple of intriguing pop musicians collaborate together. The pop musical forces at hand? Why Charli XCX and Troye Sivan, who ‘bring the heat’ on the reminiscent single, “1999.” Clocking in at a respectable 3:09, “1999” features sleek pop production, comprised of synths, keyboard, and hip-hop drum programming.
As always, Charli XCX is filled with swagger, as she delivers aggressive, highly-assertive vocals. Charli sings the majority of the opening chorus:
“I just wanna go back, back to 1999
Take a ride to my old neighborhood
I just wanna go back, sing ‘Hit me baby, one more time’
Wanna go back, wanna go.”
Charli XCX sings the first verse, reminiscing on old TV shows (Nickelodeon), “Shady” (Eminem), and youth. She follows up with the pre-chorus (“Ooh, wish that we could go back in time, uh / Good memories / Ooh, maybe we could do it tonight / Tonight’s the night”) and the chorus. Troye Sivan sings the first half of the second verse, combining forces with Charli on the second half. He reminisces on being ‘young and dumb’ and the iconic King of Pop, Michael Jackson. Charli ends up singing most of the following pre-chorus and all of the chorus, while Sivan provides minor contributions to the post-chorus. Sivan, notably, handles the majority of the bridge, among the best moments of the single:
“Back to 1999
I know those days are over but a boy can fantasize
‘Bout JTT on MTV and when I close my e-e-eyes
And I’m right there, right there…”
Final Thoughts
All in all, “1999” is a fun, well-rounded pop track by two of pop’s more intriguing artists. When both Charli XCX and Troye Sivan sing together, the blend is wonderful. Their contrasting voices contribute to the magic of this must-hear single.
