After urging her man to ‘focus on her love,’ Charli XCX expresses willingness to change her bad, non-angelic ways for her lover on “No Angel.”
“I party, get naughty / Always tellin’ myself I’ll never do this again / I’m sorry that you caught me / F**kin’ in the hotel, it didn’t mean anything.” Wow… But before we get to that, on the previous episode of Charli XCX (Focus / No Angel), all the British pop artist wants her lover to do is to quote, “focus on my love.” As you can guess, that was the “Focus” portion. Now, ‘Ms. XCX’ informs us, “I’m no angel.” Judging by the pre-chorus referenced above, that would be an accurate statement.
Charli XCX continues to make the case against herself, referencing her non-angelic actions. On the first verse, she starts out by admitting, “Always been a little bit fast and wild.” Later, on the second verse, she essentially suggests her man was “mesmerized,” going on to say, “Bet you probably thought I was your ride or die / Don’t wanna burst your bubble, but I cheat and lie.” On the chorus, she wants to keep him despite her horrible ways asserting, “I can learn.”
Final Thoughts
Thematically, angel versus devil has been around for ages – nothing brand-new. Still, Charli XCX pulls it off well with playful vocals, accompanied by sleek modern pop production. Will “No Angel” change your life or the trajectory of XCX’s career? Likely not, but its relatively catchy, and the feisty attitude is a selling point.
