Grammy-winning rapper Chance the Rapper came back strong in July 2018, releasing four, streaming-only singles simultaneously. After being impressed by the first three singles (“I Might Need Security”, “65th & Ingleside”, and “Work Out”), “Wala Cam” doesn’t disappoint. “Wala Cam” commences with an intro performed by Forever Band.  Specifically, the word “Wala” is repeated numerous times.  The chorus follows, with Chance repeating the titular lyric, “Wala cam,” over and over. It’s simple, but man, oh man does it get stuck in your head instantly!

Chance the Rapper is heavy on the melodic rap on the first verse.  Among his best lines: “I’m a fan, gotta ‘Stan’” and “Gotta cam, it’s a movie / Make my ‘Gram look like Cannes, like in France.” In between the first and second verses and the third and fourth verses, the chorus is performed by Zekur.  Chance is less melodic on the second verse.  He serves up more pointed rhymes, yet nothing overly complex (“N*gga, you can’t dance / My feet like my hands / Your feet like quicksand”). Safe to say, the rhymes are playful.

Following a chorus performed by Chance the Rapper (post-second verse), Supa Bwe delivers an assertive, sexually-charged, melodic-rapped performance on the third verse.  His most clever lyrics arrives at the jump: “Shorty stuck to me / Like she lowkey USB / I just want some head, want some lowkey guillotine.”  He also gets another thriller in with “Shorty ride my face like bike / I’ma beat it like Mike, not Ike.” Chance returns for the fourth verse, keeping the rhymes simple, but absolutely infectious.

Final Thoughts

What more can you say about Chance the Rapper? He releases four singles and all four are awesome.  Furthermore, all four are distinct.  “Wala Cam” is a reminder of the creativity and versatility of this Chi-Town treasure.
