Chance the Rapper packs a punch, bringing attitude to single “I Might Need Security,” fueled by a profane Jamie Foxx standup comedy sample.
“I’m not no boss n*gga, I’m a soldier / Kingdom builder, man somebody shoulda told ya / F*ck you.” Man, what an aggressive way to return Chance the Rapper. Following a two-year hiatus, the Grammy-winning Chi-Town rapper returned with four new singles, including “I Might Need Security.” As his aforementioned closing rhymes suggest, Chance isn’t playing around with anybody.
“I Might Need Security” features a profane Jamie Foxx sample, taken from his standup special, I Might Need Security. That phrase, looped over and over, is a favorite of teens, college kids, adults, etc. – “F*ck you”. Notably, the looped vocals have some distortion on them, which only intensifies the obscenity. With no hook, the unkind phrase serves as the most memorable line of the entire record. Beyond the sample itself, the production is amplified by drum programming, as well as a variety of production tricks that add some variance, including piano and pads.
Throughout, as expected, Chance the Rapper blesses us with his solid flow. One of his selling points is his tone. On the first verse, he has no shortage of unique references and name-drops, including the Illuminati, Heath Ledger, Jack Nicholson, Oscar De La Hoya, Verne Troyer, and Motown. He packs a mightier punch on the second verse, referencing Chicago, The Sun-Times (a Newspaper in Chicago), and being anti-Baphomet – he’s all about God after all. Besides the aforementioned lyrical gem, he also shines as he spits, “Pat me on the back too hard and Pat’ll ask for your job / And in unrelated news, someone’ll beat your ass at your job.”
Final Thoughts
How does “I Might Need Security” stack up? All in all, it’s a strong return from Chance the Rapper who seems to be in ‘beast mode.’ “I Might Need Security” probably won’t change your life, but it’s definitely worthwhile to hear him spitting bars again.
