h, sometimes it’s better to keep things lite on the fat and calories 💪! That’s the goal of the miniature playlists gracing The Musical Hype.  On 3 or 4 BOPS, we select a topic or theme, choose three or four relevant songs, and provide a lit 🔥, electrifying blurb.  3 or 4 BOPS shouldn’t take too much time to consume – typically 5 minutes or less! On the x edition of 3 or 4 BOPS (2022), we select awesome songs that are associated with CHANCE in some form or fashion.  Without further ado, let the BOPS begin!

1. Twenty One Pilots, “No Chances”

💿 Scaled and Icy • 🏷 Fueled By Ramen • 📅 2021

twenty one pilots, Scaled and Icy [📷: Fueled by Ramen]“We come for you, no chances.” Woo! In 2021, 🏆 Grammy-winning alternative duo 🎙 Twenty One Pilots returned with their sixth studio album, 💿 Scaled and Icy🎙 Tyler Joseph and 🎙 Josh Dun delivers no shortage of intriguing moments even if Scaled and Icy feels less impactful than their previous albums. One of the best songs, 🎵 “No Chances”, alone makes it worth taking a chance on the duo’s sixth studio album.

“Mm, ba-da-dum-ba-da-dum-bum

We got people on the way

We want you home in one piece now (Run away, run away)

Mm, ba-da-dum-ba-da-dum-bum

We get bodies every day

We want you home in one piece now.”

Um, okay, sure, if you say so Tyler! “No Chances,” with all its muscle 🏋 💪, appears as the penultimate record from Scaled & Icy. The firsr moment you hear this minor-key number, it is sure to win you over, beginning with the refrain excerpted above. Everything – specifically Tyler Joseph – is on-point here! There’s the menacing, minor-key backdrop, pitch-shifted vocals, and a mix of rapping and singing.  This is that alternative pop that screams crossover potential with its hip-hop cues.  Woo! In my mind, it deserved to be released as a single. Of course, there are some conceptual lyrics/theme – that goes with the Twenty One Pilots territory (“Spent some weekends on the grind / Surveillances outside, we see when you arrive / Ride or die, my son”).

2. Kiana Ledé, “Second Chances.” (Ft. 6LACK)

💿 KIKI. • 🏷 Republic • 📅 2020

Kiana Ledé, Kiki [📷: Republic]“I’m too fuckin’ real to wear my heart up on my sleeve / Fuck that back-and-forth shit, if I leave then I’m a leave / I’ma have you begging, have you pleading on your knees.” Well, damn! 2020 saw singer and actress 🎙 Kiana Ledé release her full-length, debut album, 💿 KIKI.  While KIKI hasn’t exactly lit up the charts, the album did debut in the top 30 of the Billboard 200.  More importantly, KIKI has its fair share of notable moments, including 🎵 “Forfeit.” (featuring 🎙 Lucky Daye) and the numeric song at hand, 🎵 “Second Chances.” (featuring 🎙 6LACK).

As the opening lines of the first verse indicate, you really don’t want to mess with Kiana Ledé.  “Can’t you tell a bitch is fed up with your nonsense,” she goes on to say in the brutally honest first verse.  She’s still feisty on the second verse, where she’d rather troll him than respond to his texts, and informs, “You missed out on a blessing, I made you the king of my world.”  In the chorus, she just makes it crystal clear she is done with it – “No more second chances, chances / Always tryna take advantage, ‘vantage / … So, I’d rather walk away.”  As you might expect, 6LACK provides the male response, owning up to his shortcomings.   Still, he knows it’s all for naught.   But the pain from both perspectives is our listening pleasure, along with solid production work courtesy of 🎛 Boston, 🎛 Cam Griffin, 🎛 Derrick Milano, 🎛 Mike Woods, and 🎛 Roark Bailey.

3. DJ Khaled, “Every Chance I Get” (Ft. Lil Baby & Lil Durk)

💿 KHALED KHALED 🏷 We The Best / Epic • 🗓 2021

DJ Khaled, KHALED KHALED [📷: We The Best / Epic]“She don’t got a mortgage, moved in with her niece / These niggas be cappin’, them cars be leased.” Following a thankful opener (🎵 “Thankful”) on his 2021 album, 💿 KHALED KHALED, 🏆 Grammy-winner 🎙 DJ Khaled unveils a menacing, trap banger.  On 🎵 “Every Chance I Get,” he enlists two of the biggest rappers at the time: 🎙 Lil Baby and 🎙 Lil Durk.  🎛 Tay Keith is responsible for the production, which both rappers murder – WOO!

“I’ma turn up on a hater every chance that I get

I want the biggest watch that they got, don’t care if that shit hurt my wrist

All these hoes fuck on us all, I wish I would claim that bitch

They get hard when they get guns, we got a hood full of sticks.”

Lil Baby in particular shines with his distinct tone and gets the best part of the song, the chorus.  Durk is no slouch either, providing solid contrast to Lil Baby on the third and final verse (“I got the city on lock, uh, fuckin’ up all the opps / I be around with three million dollars in jewelry, I’m standin’ on all the blocks.” #WETHEBEST!
