Country artist Carrie Underwood returns “invincible, unbreakable, unstoppable, unshakable” on the energetic, uplifting “The Champion.” She’s assisted by Ludacris.
Carrie Underwood seems like she’s been “in the game” an eternity at this point. Her success as a country music artist has been nothing short of remarkable. She returns, chocked-full of energy on “The Champion.” More often than not, she’s gone solo, but this round, she collaborates with an unlikely source, Ludacris.
The first thing that listeners will notice is the attitude and grit exhibited vocally. While it’s arguable that Carrie Underwood forces things slightly, it’s hard to knock that feistiness and intensity. Not a smooth vocal by any means, but certainly resolute, proven on the epic chorus.
“I am invincible, unbreakable / Unstoppable, unshakeable / They knock me down, I get up again / I am the champion, you’re gon’ know my name / You can’t hurt me now, I can’t feel the pain / I was made for this, yeah, I was born to win / I am the champion.”
It should be noted, this feels like a pop record, even as Underwood infuses country oomph. Seems like producer Jim Jonsin plays a role in unleashing the urban-pop sound. Ludacris adds some southern rap on the third verse, keeping things clean, positive, and tasteful.
“The C is for the courage I possess through the trauma / H is for the hurt, but it’s all for the honor / A is for my attitude working through the patience…”
Final Thoughts
On paper, a collaboration between Carrie Underwood and Ludacris seems questionable. Ultimately, there’s nothing questionable about the results. Perhaps “Champion” is a bit sappy, but the good vibes and uplifting, winning message is undeniable.
