Carrie Underwood delivers an enjoyable, countrified rendition of beloved hymn, โNothing but the Blood of Jesus.โ
Country music superstar Carrie Underwood had a great year in 2020. She released a successful Christmas album,
My Gift. Now, in 2021, the
Grammy winner returns with another contrast to the usual country script, pulling an
Alan Jackson/
Reba/
Josh Turner and releasing a Christian/Gospel album,
My Savior. When youโve had the success that Underwood has since being crowned the winner of the fourth season of American Idol, you can do whatever you want. Underwood has released a few singles from My Savior including the beloved hymn at hand,
โNothing but the Blood of Jesus.โ
While Carrie is singing long established hymns on My Savior, she keeps it country. In other words, sheโs true to self. For example, on โNothing but the Blood of Jesus,โ a hymn I personally grew up with, she sings differently than say my congregation might. This isnโt a black gospel rendition with choir but rather a rendition that plays to Underwoodโs strengths and artistry. She does a fine job preserving the sanctity of the tune, singing expressively and authentically. The countrification factor may not appeal to all but if you are a country music fan and a Carrie fan, this take should be right up your alley. โNothing but the Blood of Jesusโ doesnโt end up growing monotonous either as Underwood brings more heat as the record progresses, particularly towards the end.
Final Thoughts
All in all, Carrie Underwood delivers on โNothing but the Blood of Jesus.โ This rendition of this beloved hymn definitely doesnโt reinvent the wheel but definitely finds Underwood lauding โher savior.โ Amen! Ultimately, she sings well, the record plays to her strengths and is well-produced, and itโs another welcome addition to her rich collection.
