“Party for One,” a hella catchy anthem of self-love, could be the single that gives Canadian pop artist Carly Rae Jepsen another big-time, pop hit.
Is it a bit harsh to call Carly Rae Jepsen a one-hit wonder? Perhaps, but the biggest hit of her career is “Call Me Maybe”, and nothing else that she’s released since has caught on to that degree. Still, the Canadian pop singer continues to grind hard, even if that means it’s a “Party for One.” Literally, Jepsen’s party seems to involve some ‘self-love’ – we’ll leave it at that.
Carly Rae Jepsen keeps things ‘short and sweet,’ with “Party for One” just crossing the three-minute mark. Besides the optimal length, “Party for One” features bright, shimmering, driving production. Naturally, this bubbly sounding pop suits Jepsen, recalling the brilliant sounds of her debut album, Kiss (2012). Even though the ‘party’ is modern, it also incorporates some of those 80s vibes. 80s vibes for an 80s baby, right? The best moment of the record is the powerful, hella enthusiastic chorus. The production becomes more robust, as do Jepsen’s vocals. But before that, it should be noted that the sections of the record work very well overall. Before the awesome chorus, the pre-chorus successfully precedes:
“Party for one
If you don’t care about me
I’ll just dance for myself
Back on my beat…”
Not only is the chorus enthusiastic, it also manages to be incredibly catchy:
“You don’t want my love
If you don’t care about me
I’ll just dance for myself
Back on my beat
Party for one
If you don’t care about me
Making love to myself
Back on my beat
Ahh, ahh, ahh.”
Final Thoughts
Assuming she is a one-hit wonder, “Party for One” could be the record that gives Jepsen another big-time hit. Her vocal performance is enjoyable, and she exhibits great personality on this record. Really, there’s nothing to complain about. Honestly, who complains about self-love?
