nnuendo? More like full-on sexual vibes! Welcome to After Dark 🕛 🌃, a column featuring songs that are best suited for nighttime, specifically, the bedroom.  Many of the records featured here raise eyebrows, as well as the temperature! These After Dark tunes focus on the universal three-letter word:  SEX. The dark records gracing After Dark are old and new alike, with all genres of music welcome.  On the 3rd edition of After Dark (2022), we explore the naughty, risqué, & sexual vibes behind, 🎵 “Party for One” by 🎙 Carly Rae Jepsen.

Theme & Lyrics

“You don’t want my love / If you don’t care about me / I’ll just dance for myself,” 🎙 Carly Rae Jepsen asserts on single, 🎵 “Party for One.” “Party for One” closes out Jepsen’s superb 2019 LP, 💿 Dedicated.  The thing is, judging by the excerpted lyrics, I’m not sure there’s much After Dark 🕛 🌃 SugarHoneyIcedTea here… Well, let’s give Jepsen a few more lines, shall we?

“Back on my beat

Party for one

If you don’t care about me

Making love to myself

Back on my beat…”

eating birthday cake aloneHmm, making love to myself, huh? Sounds like a case of self-love aka masturbation. Yeah, I said it – the ‘m’ word.  Honestly, it didn’t take long for “Party for One” to be labeled among those rare masturbation songs, not to mention rarer female masturbation songs. Elite company? The thing is, Jepsen isn’t distasteful or explicit about it. Here, she keeps things ‘short and sweet,’ aided bright, shimmering, driving production (🎛 Captain Cuts and 🎛 Hightower). That bubbly-sounding pop is her calling card, NO CAP.

Focusing on the self-love, what’s the context? Basically, this guy isn’t the one for Carly, despite the fact she thought he was. “Once upon a time, I thought you wanted me,” she sings in the second verse, continuing, “Was there no one else to kiss /… Was it all a dream I let myself believe?” Apparently, the answer is yes, and despite the hurt she’s feeling because he’s NOT it, she’s going to thrive at her ‘party for one.’

Final Thoughts 💭

Bitmoji ImageHonestly, guys and girls should be able to relate to “Party for One.” Sometimes, you’ve just gotta do it on your own! I’ll leave that there… The best moment of the record is the catchy, powerful, and enthusiastic chorus, where the production grows more robust, as do Jepsen’s vocals. Her performance is enjoyable, and she exhibits a great personality on this record.  Gotta love naughty songs that aren’t too naughty!
