3 out of 5 stars

Cardi B, Be Careful © AtlanticAfter impressing with singles “Bodak Yellow” and “Bartier Cardi,” rising, unapologetic rapper Cardi B takes a step back on her third single, “Be Careful.”

Cardi B seems to be the torchbearer for the female rap game as of late.  With the successes of singles “Bodak Yellow” and “Bartier Cardi,” there is no question whatsoever she’s a rising star.  In preparation for her highly-anticipated album, the unstoppable rapper released her third single of note as a lead artist, “Be Careful.” Does she strike the same gold she struck with the aforementioned contemporary classics? Um…

Beginning with the pros, “Be Careful” features unique production work, courtesy of Boi-1da, Frank Dukes, and Vinylz.  Notable characteristics of the production work are the synths, as well as the selectively bass-heavy moments. The sounds is signature Boi-1da through and through. As for Cardi B, she continues to impress with her unique, edgy tone of voice.  Furthermore, she exhibits a solid flow.  Again, all of the aforementioned are positives, and shouldn’t be written off in the least.

With the pros come the cons, or at least more skeptical aspects of this particular song. Even considering the strengths of Cardi B, this record underwhelms.  It’s hard to follow up juggernauts, but that is the reality for the rapper, particularly considering the number one, Grammy-nominated “Bodak Yellow.” Simply put, “Be Careful” lacks the punch of those two singles. She has her lyrical moments, and the attitude is there, but this record doesn’t scream surefire hit. Give it a couple of listens, and “Be Careful” improves, but skepticism for the fact that this was released as a single still remains.

Final Thoughts

Do the cons outweigh the pros on “Be Careful.” Depends on who you ask. Arguably, when Cardi B chooses to sing as opposed to rap, it’s a questionable decision.  She’s best at spitting bars.  Then again, even with her polarizing singing, the sung hook grows on you. Some will very much write “Be Careful” off as whack.  Is it? No, but it’s a change of pace from “Bodak Level” or “Bartier Cardi.”
