Bring on the controversy! Controversial Tunes 😈🎶 is a column that provides background information and insight into songs that raised eyebrows and totally stirred the pot.  The records that grace Controversial Tunes are old and new alike, with all genres of music welcome.  In the 22nd edition of Controversial Tunes (2022), we explore the controversy behind the song, 🎵 “Meat Hook Sodomy” by 🎙 Cannibal Corpse.

Theme & Lyrics

Cannibal Corpse, Butchered at Birth [📷: Metal Blade]“Butchery, meat hooks sharp to penetrate / Emasculate, gouging crotches I will eat.” You don’t need me to explain that this is some dark, f#¢ked up $h!†, right? Perhaps the best way to describe the 🎙 Cannibal Corpse classic, 🎵 “Meat Hook Sodomy”, is by using a lyric by the late, great 🎙 Amy Winehouse: “What kind of fuckery is this?” #Mic Drop! Well, the fuckery is common for Cannibal Corpse, who’ve been shocking folks for a mighty long time.  “Meat Hook Sodomy,” in all its loud and utter disgustingness and outlandishness, appears on the metal collective’s disturbing 1991 album, 💿 Butchered at Birth.  Yeah, just let that $h!† sink in!

While the music is brash and rough around the edges, nothing stands out more than the lyrics, which are controversial because they are so crude, cruel, and raw to the nth degree.  I mean, it’s not in every song you hear about “Debauchery with dead bodies, turning green” or the “Upheaval of human entrails / Deterioration of grated genitals,” all thanks to “Obscene feelings deep inside me.” Woo! That’s only the beginning considering those lyrics are excerpted from the first verse.  In the second, the lyrics continue to be morbidly poetic as 🎙 Chris Barnes admits to exploring  “My thoughts through murder / Devoting my life to mutilation.” Yikes – that sounds utterly psychopathic! It’s definitely not family friendly that Barnes speaks of “Razor sharp hooks implanted in your rectum /… Sodomizing living beings with my utensils,” and gets specific about his dark, hellish therapy that ultimately leaves the victim “Bleeding from your arse, sudden blood ejection.”  Mercy!

Final Thoughts 💭

Obviously, the lyrics on 🎵 “Meat Hook Sodomy” aren’t intended to be taken seriously.  Regardless, perhaps they should be given how extreme the band goes.  Even 30 years after this record arrived, it remains disturbing, unsettling, and of course, CONTROVERSIAL.  It’s interesting because so much is made about how controversial and problematic rap music can be, particularly with its violent, druggy, and sexual lyrics.  Well folks, “Meat Hook Sodomy” sounds much more disturbing than many rap songs I’ve heard.  It is something else – an understatement!
