There’s been ample buzz surrounding Camila Cabello, particularly following her exit from Fifth Harmony.  Bloggers and music journalists went crazy, ready to coronate Cabello even before one solo single arrived.  The inevitable solo single happened with “Crying in the Club,” but the outcome wasn’t quite as triumphant as expected.  Personally, “Crying in the Club” was average at best.  It wasn’t a misstep, but it also didn’t showcase superstar potential.  Cabello returns with two new singles, “OMG” featuring Quavo and “Havana” featuring Young Thug.

Focusing on “OMG,” arguably, it’s a step above “Crying in the Club.” An urban-pop cut, “OMG” is quite heavy on the urban side, incorporating southern rap production.  Naturally, this plays to the strengths of Quavo, who reps Atlanta. It works for Cabello as well, even if one doesn’t envision her as a trap artist. Still, the production is characterized by G-status – Gucci Mane would’ve loved this beat.  Regardless, Camila has the sexy, confident pipes to ride the beat without a hitch.

With the production winning, what about the song and other aspects of the song? It’s alright, but not groundbreaking.  Cabello has a nice voice and the attitude to pull this joint off.  That said, while she’s a pleasure to listen to, listening to “OMG,” she still needs more to be a truly compelling, distinct solo artist.  She’s on the right track, nonetheless.  As for Quavo, he’s predictable.  Yes, he fits this joint, but, after listening to his verse, the sentiment is, “Okay, so what?”

Final Thoughts

“OMG” isn’t perfect, but it definitely has some things working for it.  Cabello nails the chorus, and simply put, you can’t go wrong with a killer chorus.  Also, while the hype machine was too heavy to begin with, the potential is clearly present.  All in all, “OMG” is a step in the right direction.
