Rising pop superstar Camila Cabello taps rising country artist Kane Brown for a remix of single “Never Be the Same,” the opening song from her debut album, ‘Camila.’
Camila Cabello dropped her debut album, Camila in the dead of winter. Sigh. Camila certainly warmed up January, earning the Cuban-American pop singer a number one album on the Billboard 200. Camila isn’t devoid of flaws but features a number of notable moments including opening single, “Never Be the Same”. Cabello taps rising country singer Kane Brown for a remix of her standout record.
Hard drums anchor “Never Be the Same.” On the first verse, Camila Cabello doesn’t ‘push’ her voice much. Her stunning falsetto shows up, in all its sexiness and sweetness, beginning on the pre-chorus. She exhibits the most vocal oomph during the high-flying chorus.
“It’s you babe
And I’m a sucker for the way that you move, babe
And I could try to run, but it would be useless
You’re to blame
Just one hit of you, I knew I’ll never be the same.”
Kane Brown delivers the final iteration of the line “Never be the same” on the post-chorus, before taking over the reins on the second verse. The verse is a bit restrained, but solidly performed. Following his verse, Cabello and Brown join forces for the majority of the pre-chorus and chorus, while they split duties on the post-chorus. They join forces once more for the bridge, and the majority of the final chorus. Overall, the vocal chemistry is just okay, certainly not ‘surefire.’ Brown’s thinner pipes seem to be mixed a bit too far back in the production, covered by Cabello at times.
Final Thoughts
Is the Cabello-Brown remix of “Never Be the Same” worthy of the buzz? Meh. It’s pleasant enough, but this odd combination of unlikely artists is more underwhelming than overwhelming.
