Camila Cabello, "Liar" [Photo Credit: Epic]Grammy-nominated pop superstar Camila Cabello returns with an infectious, jazzy, Latin-tinged single, “Liar,” set to appear on her sophomore LP.

“I don’t believe myself when I / Say that I don’t need you, oh.”  Apparently, Camila Cabello is lying to herself on her single “Liar,” set to appear on her highly anticipated sophomore album.  Cabello struck gold post-Fifth Harmony releasing her Grammy-nominated debut album, Camila in January 2018.  Safe to say, she certainly raised the temperature with hits like “Never Be the Same”, “Real Friends”, and of course, “Havana.” With “Liar,” Cabello continues to ‘kill it.’

“Liar” features jazzy, Latin-tinged production work, courtesy of Andrew Watt (better known as watt) and The Monsters & Strangerz.  Notably, two samples fuel the fire of the record: “All That She Wants” by Ace of Base and “All Night Long (All Night)” by Lionel Richie. The groove latches from the onset, and the reggaeton influences are loud and clear.  One has to love how Cabello is unapologetic in tapping into her Cuban roots.  Besides the music, Cabello serves up playful, sassy vocals, which perfectly match the Latin cues captured musically. Excellent use of vocal layering, particularly when Cabello sings in octaves, only accentuates the brilliance of the record. The chorus serves as the centerpiece, in all its catchiness:

“Oh no, there you go, you’re making me a liar
Got me begging you for more
Oh no, there I go, startin’ up a fire
Oh no, no (Oh no)
Oh no, there you go, you’re making me a liar
I kinda like it though
Oh no, there I go, startin’ up a fire
Oh no, no.”

Final Thoughts

All in all, “Liar” definitely builds excitement for album number two from Camila Cabello.  The ear candy is legit with strong production work, playful, well-executed and well-produced vocals, and overall catchy songwriting, particularly the chorus.  Perhaps “Liar” doesn’t change any lives, but it’s definitely a bop.
