Scottish DJ/producer Calvin Harris and Canadian R&B singer/songwriter The Weeknd join forces for the surefire bop, “Over Now.”
Calvin Harris. The Weeknd. Just ponder the possibilities with those two awesome musicians! Thankfully, those possibilities became reality via the single, “Over Now.” Both musicians produce this must-hear joint, which commences with warm, lush pads that definitely set the tone.
The listeners get a very brief intro before The Weeknd blesses us with his instrument – always a momentous occasion! As to be expected, his vocals are gorgeous. He merely has a tone that makes you feel some type of way when he sings, period. That said, the production, as aforementioned, is quite the catalyst; the backdrop is a vibe-and-a-half. The sound is modern, yet also hearkens back to the R&B of the past. This backdrop includes a sick groove, robust bass line, and lush strings (keyboards). Soulful, soulful, soulful!
“Over Now” tackles a topic that the Canadian R&B artist is well versed in: LOVE. Specifically, he tackles the end of a relationship that didn’t need to happen. There are, of course, notable lyrics on the verses. On the first, he sings, “Your girls ain’t shit, tryna get me off your mind / The same ones who be hittin’ up my lane.” Wow! On the second, he sings, “Feedin’ the press, but we don’t speak / But we’re both with somebody else / So please stop callin’ me.” The centerpiece is none other than the catchy, memorable chorus:
“‘Cause it’s over now, oh yeah Don’t get too confused, girl, it’s over now, oh yeah, uh No comin’ back around, baby Nothin’ left to lose, girl, it’s over now (oh yeah, yeah).”
Final Thoughts
Again, just think about it: Calvin Harris and The Weeknd together. There was no way these two musical giants weren’t going to deliver the fire when collaborating together. “Over Now” is a vibe-and-a-half, period. Great production, great vocals, and memorable, relatable songwriting. BOOM!
