βSame Shhhβ Is An Indie Rock Gem
Contributed by George James
Hull is becoming a hub for indie music. First, we had Life and then Girl Afraid, and now we have Calboa. An artist who is not sticking anywhere close to the industry mould. He takes on a whole new direction of his own, and his latest release puts his unique style on full display.
βSame Shhhβ [βSame Sh*tβ] is all about doing the same thing every single day. I am sure you can relate to that right about now, right? Well, I can. It is not exactly an upbeat release. Therefore, if you are down in the dumps, then this one is probably not for you unless you are looking for something to relate. It is pretty cloudy for the most part, and even the music gives out a pretty subdued mood.
Nevertheless, it works in the indie world. It is how some artists make their name, just think of Morrisey, for example. Also, although particular pessimistic about usual routine there is heaps amounts to like about the track. The music is vivid and likeable. It kicks off with an organ sound which takes us straight into the mix. Vocally, Calboa appears a little flat to start with, but I just believe this is his style of singing. I doubt it was an accident, and it only adds to the vibe which he creates.
On the contrary, there are elements of his vocals within the track which shine brightly, and he does prove he is a singer to keep a close eye on. Also, it is refreshing to hear the rawest within his voice, knowing that has not undergone the artificial polishing which we often hear on commercial releases.
Overall, I think it is a solid track. I think it could be better at times, but then again, it is rare for me to find a record which ticks all my boxes.
