1. Demi Lovato, “Melon Cake”

💿 Dancing with the Devil… The Art of Starting Over • 🏷 Island • 📅 2021

Demi Lovato, Dancing with the Devil... The Art of Starting Over [📷: Island]🎵 “Melon Cake” was one of the most anticipated songs from 💿 Dancing with the Devil… The Art of Starting Over, the seventh studio album by 🏆 Grammy-nominated pop star, 🎙 Demi Lovato. Throw in alluring 80s production and transparent Demi and you’ve got a surefire bop. There are a couple of entertaining lines like “People out here getting’ fired for chocolate in the backseat (It’s a true story).” Indeed, it is true, and the story behind the song is sad, made more realistic thanks to Lovato’s transparency.

The chorus is absolutely excellent, speaking her team only allowing her to eat melon cake on her birthdays so that she can be Barbie essentially! Demi, rightfully, swears off melon cake, as well as a number of unhealthy things in her life. “Melon Cake” easily ranks among the best songs on Dancing with the Devil… The Art of Starting Over.

2. Trey Songz, “Cake”

💿 Trigga Reloaded • 🏷 Atlantic • 📅 2015

Trey Songz, Trigga [📷: Atlantic]“They say all I talk about is sex.” Well, 🎙 Trey Songz, that’s because more often than not, we associate the R&B singer with sex.  The song at hand, 🎵 “Cake,” from his 2015 album, 💿 Trigga Reloaded, is no exception for damn sure.  Why? Well, “Cake’s-cake’s-cake’s on the menu…”

“Baby, this might sound rude
I’m taken but I want you
And I don’t wanna play by the book, no rules
They say you can’t have cake and it too
But ain’t that what you s’posed to do?”

“Cake” definitely kicks the original album (released in 2014) off naughtily, reappearing as the third track on Trigga Reloaded.  Ultimately, it marks one of the album’s triumphs. That second verse is something else, where ‘Trigga’ sings, “Light-skinned girls got that red velvet / Dark-skinned girls, chocolate / White girls got vanilla frosting / Cake tastes great, I love all of it / I’ve got a sweet tooth and it’s just for you…” Sexed-up to the nth degree!

3. Melanie Martinez, “Strawberry Shortcake”

💿 K-12 • 🏷 Atlantic • 🗓 2019

Melanie Martinez, K-12 [📷: Atlantic]🎙 Melanie Martinez was among the most compelling contestants on NBC’s vocal competition, 📺 The Voice.  In 2019, she returned with her conceptual, ‘school-centric’ sophomore album, 💿 K-12.  Cry Baby, the central character on her 2015 debut, 💿 Cry Baby, returned on K-12.  Sweetening up this caked-up version of 5ive Songs is yummy 🎵 “Strawberry Shortcake.”

“Instead of making me feel bad for the body I got / Just teach him to keep it in his pants and tell him to stop.” On-point to the nth degree, “Strawberry Shortcake” tackes the unfair objectification of women.  “Sayin’ it’s my fault, it’s my fault ‘cause I put icing on top,” Martinez sings on the catchy, thought-provoking chorus, continuing, “Now, the boys want a taste of the strawberry shortcake.” “Strawberry Shortcake” sends the message of treating women with respect, not as sexual objects.

4. DNCE, “Cake by the Ocean”

💿 DNCE • 🏷 Republic • 📅 2016

DNCE, DNCE [📷: Republic]“Goddamn / See you licking frosting from your own hand / Want another taste, I’m begging, yes ma’am / I’m tired of all this candy on the dry land, dry land.” Frosting, huh?  Is that what they call it these days? 🎵 “Cake by the Ocean” ( 💿 DNCE) arrives courtesy of the 🎙 Joe Jonas-led pop collective, 🎙 DNCE.  Breakout hit “Cake by the Ocean” is among the most entertaining, fun, and carefree songs of the 00s.

Even so, the fun served up on “Cake by the Ocean” is fueled by mad innuendo.  Can you say sex? Safe to say, the metaphor is extended on “Cake.” At one point, Jonas describes her as being “fucking delicious” in an ad-lib.  The same sentiment could be said about “Cake by the Ocean” – it’s a truly infectious, highly suggestive gem.

“Talk to me, baby
I’m going blind from this sweet, sweet craving, whoa-oh
Let’s lose our minds and go fucking crazy
Ah ya ya ya ya I
Keep on hopin’ we’ll eat cake by the ocean.”

5. Rihanna, “Birthday Cake”

💿 Talk That Talk • 🏷 Def Jam • 📅 2011

Rihanna, Talk That Talk [📷: Def Jam]🏆 Grammy-winning pop/R&B artist 🎙 Rihanna definitely isn’t really referencing birthday cake on 🎵 “Birthday Cake,” a short but utterly sweet stand out from her 2011 album, 💿 Talk That Talk. Her “Birthday Cake” is all about the bedroom – Sex, sex, and more S-E-X.  The case(s) in point – “Come and put your name on it,” “But he wanna lick the icing off,” and “I know you want to bite this.”

To reiterate, in no way, shape, or form is Rihanna talking about actual birthday cake – period! Yes, it’s customary to decorate birthday cake by ‘putting your name on it,’ but when she sings the line, she isn’t talking about icing.  No, it’s totally sexual innuendo and double entendre! She even expounds: “It’s not even my birthday / But he wanna lick the icing off…” Come on! – Pun intended, of course. Rihanna amplifies ‘S meets E, and then they X’ really, REALLY, loudly on this gem that literally screams orgasm.
