Breakthrough K-Pop standouts BTS enlists American Grammy-nominated rapper Nicki Minaj for the remix of “Idol,” which appears on ‘Love Yourself 結 ‘Answer’.’
K-Pop group BTS have become quite a big deal in the United States – understatement. Earlier in 2018, the collective debuted at no. 1 on the Billboard 200 with their album, Love Yourself 轉 ‘Tear’, the first K-Pop group to do so. Now, they return with Love Yourself 結 ‘Answer’, comprised of two discs, and featuring songs that appeared originally on Love Yourself 轉 ‘Tear’. One of the notable additions is a remix of “Idol,” which adds a guest appearance from rapper Nicki Minaj.
Nicki Minaj delivers the intro (“Uh / BTS / Chun-Li), before BTS gets the work. The production is energetic, set in a minor key. The drum programming and synths are awesome, as is the blend of urban and reggaetón music cues. Naturally, BTS matches the incredibly energetic production, amped up on this particular single. The verses mix both Korean and English, which is incredibly cool. On the first verse, performed by RM and J-Hope, one of the key lyrics is “You can call me artist / You can call me idol.” The second verse is written similarly. Beyond the verses, there are plenty of other sections in regards to form, including a refrain, pre-chorus, chorus, hook, and later, a bridge. The key English lyrics on the chorus, performed by RM and Jimin, are, “You can’t stop me lovin’ myself…”
Nicki Minaj arrives on the third verse. During her verse, she shouts out Korea, asserts her ‘boss’ status, serves as a hype woman, drops some suggestiveness (“‘Cause if he look good, throw my pants in the air…”), and naturally, mentions Barbies. After leaving her mark, “Idol” concludes with the chorus, and the hook, composed of nonsensical syllables.
Final Thoughts
All in all, “Idol” in its remixed form is an energetic, high-flying record. Nicki Minaj is a perfect fit, bringing some extra swagger to the joint. Her presence on this record further amplifies the rise of this K-Pop group as a major pop force in the United States. That said, BTS have plenty of swagger in their own right. Great, hella groovy, and fresh addition to any playlist.
