Ah, bring on Midnight Heat 🕛 🔥! Wait – it is not usually hot at midnight! Well, it is steaming hot 🥵 at midnight when it comes to this naughty, innuendo and sex-laden column featuring songs intended for nighttime. Yeah, we are talking about that after dark type $hi†, ya dig? These risqué, unapologetic records often raise eyebrows and temperature alike. In the 2nd edition of Midnight Heat (2024), we explore the naughty, sexy vibes behind, “Gorilla” by Bruno Mars.

He pens this animalistic joint alongside The Smeezingtons. The Smeezingtons also produce with Emile Haynie, Jeff Bhasker, and Mark Ronson.  The sound of “Gorilla,” including Mars’ vocal performance, is compelling even if it feels dirty AF.

Bitmoji ImageFrom the get-go, the sex feels sus.  “Ooh, I got a body full of liquor / With a cocaine kicker,” Mars asserts, adding, “And I’m feelin’ like I’m thirty feet tall.” Woo! We know that Bruno is a short king, in reality, so the substances have him incredibly turnt up. It’s worth noting, Mars had a cocaine possession case on his hands prior to the release of Unorthodox Jukebox.  Refocusing on “Gorilla,” how about his lover’s participation in all of this: “You got your legs up in the sky / With the devil in your eyes.” This is all from the first verse mind you. In the second, it’s even raunchier: “If the neighbors call the cops, call the sheriff, call the SWAT / We don’t stop, we keep rockin’ while they knockin’ on our door.” The prize line of verse two follows: “And you’re screamin’, ‘Give it to me, baby / Give it to me, motherfucker.” Word.  More like F…  Another lyrical highlight that must be mentioned on this unapologetic Bruno Mars joint is the assertion in the pre-chorus, “You’ll be bangin’ on my chest, bang, bang, gorilla.” Admittedly, “Gorilla” was not one of my favorites by Mars back in the day, but, it’s worth discussing, particularly when it comes to the sex.
