Ah, it’s time to get cozy and totally cover up! In COVERS, we highlight a musician or band covering songs by another musician (likely a popular musician). COVERS separates itself from a related column, Head 2 Head 🗣️ only highlighting the musician who covers, as opposed to the original/most famous performer. COVERS is open to both established musicians and musicians who may not be as well-known. In the 9th edition of COVERS (2023), 🎙 Bruce Springsteen delivers a compelling rendition of 🎵 “Turn Back The Hands Of Time”, originally performed by 🎙 Tyrone Davis.

Bruce Springsteen, Only The Strong Survive [📷: Bruce Springsteen]🎙 Bruce Springsteen took a risk in 2022.  Rather than recording an album of originals, he opted to record an album of soul covers, 💿 Only The Strong Survive. The challenge when covering others is your version is compared to the original, which, more often than not, earns definitive offers.  That said, given the rich musical contributions Bruce has delivered in his illustrious career, he can easily afford to take a risk 💪.  Only The Strong Survive highlights some of the most beloved soul classics including the 1970 🎙 Tyrone Davis gem, 🎵 “Turn Back The Hands Of Time”.  In the hands of Mr. Springsteen, he preserves the sanctity of the original penned by 🎼 ✍️ Johnny Moore and Jack Daniels ✅. Vocally, He is assertive, bringing plenty of authenticity and grit to his performance ✅.  SleepingEven though he delivers a punch, it doesn’t feel forced – it’s characteristic of the energy he serves up with his rock performances 🤘. Beyond the powered-up vocals (and ad-libs), the arrangement is quite similar to the original, amplified by the advancement in recording technology since the 1970s 😉.  The production by Springsteen and 🎛 Rob Aniello is A OK👌! One notable tweak does occur – a modulation (key change) – which ups the ante.  All in all, The Boss does a bang-up job of channeling his inner Tyrone Davis, without compromising his own artistry.
