After spoiling us with her “Private Show,” Britney Spears returns with Glory single no. 3, the entertaining and energetic “Clumsy.”
Britney Spears looks to reclaim her throne, period. It’s been a while since she’s been relevant – she plans on changing that on comeback album Glory. After releasing silky smooth single “Make Me” and the sexy “Private Show,” Spears drops a third single “Clumsy.” The question is, is Spears’ “Clumsy” a clumsy release?
“Clumsy” features an interesting groove. The bag of production tricks is both alluring and varied. The synths and drum programming stand out in particular. Incredibly energetic, the exuberance is one of the chief selling points. What works well with energy? A quick tempo. “Clumsy” has that on lockdown.
“Clumsy” is superb ear candy, but imperfect. Ultimately, it’s more record than song. Clearly, there’s a lack of meaningful lyrics and substance. Spears doesn’t give a vocal masterclass, (nor is she expected to), but the vocal distortion is a pro, as well as touches of falsetto.
Final Thoughts
All in all, “Clumsy” is enjoyable and entertaining, though not quite as good as “Private Show.” Well-produced as all three pre-release singles from Glory have been, “Clumsy” is slick and incredibly modern. Lyrically, it lacks substance. “Clumsy” is more focused more on sound and swagger as opposed to depth. Nonetheless, it has its moments.
