Rising California country singer-songwriter shines on “Mercy,” a ‘late’ single issued from his 2017 self-titled debut album.
37-year old country musician Brett Young had a great year in 2017. No, his self-titled album didn’t move stellar numbers, debuting at no. 18, but the Orange County Cali musician scored some hits. Two songs dominate when discussing album number one: Opener “Sleep Without You” and the superb “In Case You Didn’t Know.” Young has another gem worth noting that closes out the album, “Mercy.”
The release of “Mercy,” specifically the music video more than a year after the release of an album, is a bit surprising. Brett Young has sort of ran its course, naturally. Despite the odd timing, “Mercy” is another superb record. Like “In Case You Didn’t Know,” it’s a radiant, incredibly thoughtful ballad. Young sounds genuine – his authenticity is unquestionable.
“So, if you’re gonna break my heart, just break it
And if you’re gonna take your shot, then take it
Take it
If you made up your mind, then make it
But make this fast
If you ever loved me
Have mercy.”
Clearly, this is the end of a relationship. Young is heartbroken, asking his soon-to-be ex to be merciful with the closing of a chapter at hand. “Mercy” shines because it is relatable. While this is a country record by genre classification, the appeal is wider and less ‘tied down’ to the Nashville base. In the age where country is among a number of genres that are ‘cooling’ a bit, crossover appeal, with a well-written, well-executed song is key.
Final Thoughts
Yes, “Mercy” arrives more than a year after the release of Brett Young. That said, “have mercy” on the country musician! “Mercy” showcases Young at his best. Strong vocals, relatable subject matter, and fine execution. “In case you didn’t know,” Brett Young has a lot to offer. Also, worth noting, “Mercy” appeared on our playlist, Merciful, Mercy Songs, Vol. 1 (published October 10, 2017).
