Illinois’ own Brett Eldredge delivers a fun, infectious single with “Something I’m Good At,” hailing from his third studio album, ‘Brett Eldredge.’
Brett Eldredge has picked up some steam over the last couple of years. The Illinois country singer, like many contemporaries around his age, has shown willingness to expand the country music script. His 2015 sophomore album, Illinois, showcased this, particular his duet with Thomas Rhett, “Can’t Stop Me.” On his third studio album, Brett Eldredge, his adventurous spirit continues. He gets it done on fun promo single “Somethin’ I’m Good At.”
The sound of “Somethin’ I’m Good At” represents one of its best qualities. It’s energetic and sounds fun from the jump. Add to that energy the exuberance of Brett Eldredge, and early on,
“Somethin’ I’m Good At” seems destined to be a hit. But wait, there’s more. Eldredge incorporates the art of self-deprecation, which is always a selling point. Maybe that’s unfortunate in some cases, but he treats his weaknesses in tongue-n-cheek fashion, which only amplifies the charm.
The chorus is top-notch – infectious to the nth degree:
“I can’t change the world, no I can’t change a flat / If you give me your heart, girl, well, you may never get it back / You said you’d never smile again, but oh no, here it comes / Would you look at that? / I finally found somethin’ I’m good at.”
Besides the fantastic chorus, the second half of the song showcases Eldredge’s knack for eclecticism. The bridge is clearly different from the verse and chorus, providing clear separation. Also, prior to the perceived end of the song, the charming singer declares: “You though it was over,” before keeping the fun going. It’s corny, but infectious and different than what we come to expect from country music.
Final Thoughts
So, how does “Somethin’ I’m Good At” stack up? It’s a winner, no questions asked. Brett Eldredge has both a great voice and personality, which really sell this particular record. It’s well-produced, has an element of unpredictability, and most of all, it’s fun.
