Welcome to Music Lifts, featuring songs that encourage, inspire, and uplift the spirit; songs that exude fortitude, positivity, and resolve, even in the face of adversity.  Featured songs aren’t genre-specific; songs may or may not be faith-based. The goal is for these songs to make you feel better – be LIFTED to new heights!  So, for the 38th edition of Music Lifts (2025), we highlight “One Voice” as performed by Brandy.

“One sky above / There is just once source of love / If I’ve got once chance, once choice / I’ll sing it from the heart / One song, one voice.”
Can I get an amen? Can I get a hallelujah! The One is a big one. “One Voice” is a big-time, big gospel-infused, powerful R&B ballad. Grammy-winning R&B artist Brandy (Brandy Norwood, b. 1979) eats on the inspirational, meaningful, and uplifting 14th track from her multi-platinum, 1998 album, Never Say Never. Phil Galdston (b. 1950) and Gordon Chambers (b. 1969) penned this thoughtful gem while Grammy-winning, Canadian record producer extraordinaire, David Foster (b. 1949), produced it.  The results yield a timeless song that never ceases to amaze every time you hear it.

Brandy lets her distinct, nuanced pipes shine throughout its tuneful melody and positive, resounding lyrics.  Of course, the excellence and substance of “One Voice” don’t solely rely on the chorus.  The verses, as well as the bridge, resonate too. “I’ve seen the fires of deep division / The hearts of stone, the cold ambition,” Brandy sings in the second verse, and continues, positively, “But I have found my sacred mission / To live in this world and still believe.” Believe in what? One sky, one source of love, one song, and one voice, of course! In the bridge, she speaks of “A song that heals / A melody of reason and freedom / With words that will speak for the weak.” “One Voice” closes its biggest, with Brandy on autopilot, featuring the backing of a big, anointed choir. Beyond the choir, which is superbly arranged by Mervyn Warren (b. 1964), the accompaniment and production are magnificent, too.  Beyond the rhythm guitar, keys, drum programming, and strings add to the warmth, celestial, and unity-seeking vibes.  “One Voice” is a moving and remarkable gospel-infused R&B ballad. This marks one of Brandy’s most accomplished vocal performances of her illustrious career.
