“Try and catch me tying up loose ends / I’m past that, now I wanna fuck all my friends.” Hmm, I see brakence, I see. It certainly makes sense within the song at hand, “fwb.” “Fwb” is an acronym for exactly what you think it is – friends with benefits.  Put two and two together, and, of course we see why the pop musician wants to ‘do it’ with all his friends, sigh.  By the way, there is no shortage of expressiveness, not only vocally but also where profanity is concerned.  Let’s just say, brakence lets ‘em fly!

He seems to have reason to swear like a sailor – he’s MAD.  Why? A failed relationship, and she’s to blame! “Think I don’t say enough / I won’t be runnin’ back ‘long as I’m faded and / Fucked up ‘cause you’re gone and the clique gone too,” he sings on the first verse, continuing, “I turned to someone I could hold onto.” Ouch! His emotional delivery definitely packs a punch, as does his distinct, nuanced voice (particularly the low register) and the freshness of the lyrics overall.  An example of that freshness and swagger: “I didn’t understand how I could’ve macked / Y’all gonna wonder who I am.”  Besides his unique voice, expressive lyrics, and potty mouth, the production stands out, particularly the punk-rock-like ending to this contemporary sounding pop joint.

Final Thoughts

“Fwb” doesn’t even reach two-and-a-half-minutes in duration.  It doesn’t need to.  Brakence is honest AF about where he stands in the realm of love, and he lets the whole world know.  Further amplifying such an honest performance is the booming, heavily distorted drum programming, and of course, the left-field shift to, punk.  If nothing else, “fwb” is an intriguing, ear-catching listen.
