“H

ula hoop girl at the edge of the crowd / She goes round and round and round and round / Something hypnotic about how turns / She just whirls and whirls and whirls and whirls.” Ooh, wee – hypnotic indeed! The hula hoop girl that Melbourne queer pop-maker 🎙 Just Shy sings about in the chorus is captivating.  More captivating, however, is the talent of the musician and the song itself, 🎵 “Hula Hoop Girl”.  On “Hula Hoop Girl,” Just Shy collaborates with his good friend, DJ/producer 🎙 🎛 Boyd Kelly. Safe to say, the resulting record is a surefire, must-hear B-O-P.

funAccording to Just Shy, “Hula Hoop Girl” is inspired by pop, funk, and R&B sounds of the mid-2000s.  I’d totally agree! It’s easy to hear those styles fused into one on this bright, sunny, and incredibly fun joint.  Boyd Kelly puts in work!  Even with the aughts making a return in the 2020s, “Hula Hoop Girl” sounds like a ‘fresh throwback’ if anything.   That’s a win. The moment you hear it, it makes you want to move and groove.  Just Shy has a terrific voice, singing incredibly expressively with ample personality. The runs are on-point. Furthermore, I dig the vocal production, particularly when the vocals are layered (included select harmonies).

Bitmoji ImageFinally, I must highlight the songwriting. Have I mentioned that “Hula Hoop Girl” is buckets of F-U-N? It’s all about good vibes man! “I’m always so damn distracted by things I think I’m lacking / Counting dollars and hours, imagined superpowers.” Say that Just Shy! We all get caught up, but then, we have to stop and ‘smell the roses,’ sort of like Just ended up “Spotting this girl and she stop me in my tracks.” Woo! He comes to realize “Nothing else matters, there’s no where or when / Once in my life I don’t have to pretend / Focus on now and forget about then.”

Final Thoughts 💭

quality contentJust Shy is the sugar honey iced tea, period.  Him and Boyd Kelly – well – they ‘do the day-um thing’ on “Hula Hoop Girl.” If you need a song that’s going to lift you up, particularly on a cloudy day, look no further than “Hula Hoop Girl.” You won’t be able to get it unstuck from your head!
