1. Charli XCX, “Guess” (Ft. Billie Eilish)
“Guess” // Atlantic // 2024
“You wanna guess what me and Billie have been textin’ about?” Charli XCX (Charlotte Aitchison) dropped one of the year’s best albums with Brat. Reissued as Brat and it’s the same but there’s three more songs so it’s not, among the three additional songs was “Guess.” Post-Brat and it’s the same but there’s three more songs so it’s not, she dropped the remix of “Guess” featuring Academy and Grammy-award-winning superstar, Billie Eilish. Charli XCX, Eilish, Dylan Brady, and producers FINNEAS and The Dare (Patrick Smith) penned the remix.
This sub-two-and-a-half-minute cut is a surefire banger. The instrumental accompaniment is lit. The synths and the groove make you want to dance and fuel the fire of these two talented ladies. Charli XCX takes first blood, dropping attitude-filled chanted vocals during the first verse. “You wanna guess the color of my underwear? / You wanna know what I got goin’ on down there?” she asks boldly, continuing, “Is it pretty in pink or all see-through? / Is it showin’ brand-new lower-back tattoo?” Bold. She continues the infectious, naughty lyrics in the chorus:
“Try it, bite it, lick it, spit it
Put it to the side and get all up in it
Wear ‘em, post ‘em, might remix it
Send ‘em to The Dare, yeah, I think he’s with it.”
It’s sexual, but the lyrics are deeper. Fittingly, XCX references Billie: “Eat it up for lunch, yeah, it’s so delicious.” Eilish eats in the second verse, playing off XCX’s sassy first verse: “Don’t have to guess the color of your underwear / Already know what you’ve got goin’ on down there.” Eilish also performs the second chorus, dropping the best line of “Guess”: “Charli likes boys, but she knows I’d hit it.” “Guess” is a BOP, BOP, BOP!

2. Shawn Mendes, “Why Why Why”
Shawn // Island // 2024
“Opened up my journal to a page / Everything that hurts me’s still the same / Feels like there’s nothin’ new for me to say / Why, why, why?” The handsome and talented, Grammy-nominated Canadian singer/songwriter Shawn Mendes returned in 2024 with his fifth studio album, Shawn (arrives October 18, 2024). He ‘brought down the house’ with the promo single, “Why Why Why”, penned and produced by Mendes, Eddie Benjamin, Mike Sabath, and Scott Harris. Mendes excels in the vocal department, as always. His tone is ‘simply beautiful.’ He sings authentically and expressively making some personal revelations. He discusses breaking off a relationship (“But I went off and chose myself instead”), taking a hiatus from touring (“All the lights were fuckin’ with my head”), and not being ready for fatherhood (“I thought I was about to be a father / Shook me to the core, I’m still a kid”). Even as Shawn reignites his music career after a breakup and mental health issues, he still questions, why, why, why? “Why Why Why” is respectable and well-rounded. It’s authentic, rhythmic, and tuneful. Stylistically, it plays to Mendes’ strengths and throws a cool country element into the mix. It’s not a dramatic change of pace for Shawn, but what’s clear is he remains a gifted vocalist (and easy on the eyes).

3. Lady Gaga & Bruno Mars, “Die With a Smile”
“Die With A Smile” // Interscope // 2024
Music lovers worldwide were bestowed an unexpected gift: a collaboration between highly decorated musicians Lady Gaga and Bruno Mars. These award-winning, gifted individuals duet in the single, “Die With A Smile”. Lady Gaga, Mars, Andrew Watt, Dernst “D’Mile” Emile II, and James Fauntleroy penned “Die With A Smile.” Gaga, Mars, Emile, and Watt produced it. The results are sublime. “Die With A Smile” commences with rhythm guitar which propels the groove. Mars sings the first verse, pre-chorus, and chorus. “I, I just woke up from a dream / Where you and I had to say goodbye,” he sings, continuing, “And I don’t know what it all means / But since I survived, I realized / Wherever you go, that’s where I’ll follow.” As always, his tone is beautiful; he delivers a commanding and smooth performance. The chorus is big and soulful, in a pop sort of way, welcoming punchy drums:
“If the world was ending
I’d wanna be next to you
If the party was over
And our time on Earth was through
I’d wanna hold you just for a while
And die with a smile
If the world was ending
I’d wanna be next to you.”
Lady Gaga arrives in the second verse. Mars harmonizes with her (“‘Cause you already know what you mean to me / And our love’s the only one worth fighting for”). Their vocal chemistry is undeniable – two dynamic singing vocals meshing celestially. Following the dynamic second chorus, there is a change of pace during the brief bridge, where the piano is more prominent in the accompaniment (“Right next to you / Next to you / Right next to you”). With the return of the chorus, this dynamic duo is just that – dynamic! Lady Gaga and Bruno Mars make a formidable team in their first-ever collaboration. “Die With A Smile” is the sugar honey iced tea.

4. Jonah Almost, “Clean Cut”
“Clean Cut” // Jonah Almost / Headroom // 2024
Five words: “Break it off clean cut.” Yep, that’s about the size of the lyrics of “Clean Cut” by the hot 🥵 and talented Jonah Almost (Jonah Rollins). Providing some variation, occasionally, “Yeah, just let me know / Don’t want this please just let me go” is added. The songwriting is minimalist and simple. Even so, the simplicity, repetition, and nonchalant vocals are part of the charm. Where the meat of “Clean Cut” comes into play is the instrumental. Almost penned and produced “Clean Cut.” The results are sweet. Although the lyrics and vocals are uncomplicated, the instrumental is lit. The beat grooves hard – who doesn’t adore a thudding kick? It’s not all four on the floor, as the groove features plenty of variation. Even how the beat is panned at times is part of the excellence. Besides the beat, the synths are electric, easily channeling the (gay 🏳️🌈) club 🕺. The rhythmic nature of the synths and a variety of lower/higher and harder/softer keeps “Clean Cut” hella engaging. Also contributing to the engagement is a change of pace within the final minute. Jonah switches the instrumental palette up while maintaining a kick-ass beat. “Clean Cut” is the sugar honey iced tea. Prepare to dance, dance, dance!

5. Muni Long, “Ruined Me”
Revenge // Supergiant / Def Jam // 2024
“Every night, I’ve been crying / I can’t fall asleep / Laying in the bed in my diamonds / I still wear my ring.” Uh-oh! It’s given a heaping dose of heartbreak. Muni Long (Priscilla Renae) is ruined regarding L-O-V-E on her marvelous single, “Ruined Me”. “Ruined Me” appears on the Grammy winner’s sophomore album, Revenge (arrives August 30, 2024). Renae penned “Ruined Me” with producers Jeff “Gitty” Gitelman and Kevin Theodore. The backdrop sounds classic, dramatic, and modern. The soulful vibes are amplified. Throughout “Ruined Me,” Long shows off her big, commanding, and powerful voice. She sings expressively and pours her all into the song. “I won’t pretend I was perfect / Like I don’t deserve / Some of this hurt,” she asserts in the second verse, adding, “Whoever might try to love me next / Is gon’ have a time.” Oh, snap! She makes you feel her pain and the ruin! The section to beat, unsurprisingly, is the chorus.
“After you (You), I’ll probably never love again (Never love)
This kind of heartbreak don’t ever end (Baby)
Baby, you ruined me.”
“Ruined Me” is top-notch. Strong, heartfelt vocals, honest, relatable songwriting, and sleek, characteristic R&B production make this a surefire bop.

6. Benson Boone, “Pretty Slowly”
“Pretty Slowly” // Night Street / Warner // 2024
Benson Boone without a shirt = fire. More pertinent than showing off his chiseled bod on the cover art of his single, “Pretty Slow”, is showing off those big, dynamic pipes. “Pretty Slowly” arrives post-Fireworks & Rollerblades. Boone, Evan Blair, and Jack LaFrantz penned it. Blair also produced it. The results = positive! The first thing that catches the ear is Boone’s vocals. His tone is beautiful, including his middle register and falsetto. He’s supported by a folk-pop backdrop. As “Pretty Slow” progresses (the chorus, specifically), Benson ratchets up the vocal intensity. The second iteration of the chorus, after the second verse is even bigger. The chorus is lengthier than usual but that’s part of the allure and charm:
“And it started pretty slowly
Oh, when you asked about the old me
‘Oh, is he gone? Oh, is he gone?’ Oh, I don’t know
I think I left him somewhere I no longer go…
And it’s falling into pieces
No there’s not a way that we can stop this now…”
Then, he brings things down. The bridge is more poised, accompanied initially by an acoustic rhythm guitar. No worries, Boone nor the music doesn’t stay low. The instrumentation picks up, as does Boone’s volume and vocal register. He gets high and powered TF up as he sings, “Oh, there’s still two lovers / So who the hell are we?” Before all of this goes down, he’s reflective regarding a past relationship. He’s honest, even dropping a few baby swears in the mix. “When I’m driving through the Rockies / And I feel this little knife in my heart / And it bleeds me out / Don’t wanna love, I don’t wanna love you now,” he sings at the end of the first verse. In the second, he asserts, “I wanna know if you’re okay, mm / And I hope that you’re so damn sure that leaving me was right.” Oh, snap! Once again, our shirtless-loving, big-voiced Gen-Z singer/songwriter comes through big on “Pretty Slowly”.

7. Zedd & Remi Wolf, “Lucky”
Telos // Interscope // 2024
“Even though it still hurts a lot / Would’ve been a lot worse if I stayed.” Oh, snap! Grammy-winning Russian-German DJ and producer Zedd enlisted the vocal talents of Remi Wolf for “Lucky”, a promo single from his third album, Telos. He and Wolf penned “Lucky” alongside dwilly (David Wilson), ellis (Ellis Lawrie), and Ilya Kozich. Zedd, ellis, and dwilly produced this brief record. After the accompaniment begins rhythmically but spare, it evolves into a bright, picturesque instrumental. The producers put in sleek work behind the boards. The articulation of the synths and crispness during the drop particularly stand out. Wolf delivers robust, expressive lead vocals. She sings a pair of verses about a defunct relationship. Even though she’s still hurting (“Now I’m driving, and every word around me looks like you”), she knows her decision to leave was correct. In the chorus, she admits, “I wanted to catch you / But you pulled me like a magnet /… But you dragged me through the fire.” Even so, she has no regrets “because you taught me a lesson / Now I’m feeling so damn lucky.” Besides her commanding and confident lead vocals, the harmonized background vocals are a treat too. The drop, in all its infectious and repetitive glory, is the sugar honey iced tea, too (“Lucky, I, I / Now I’m feeling so damn lucky”). Although “Lucky” is brief, Zedd, with ample help from Remi Wolf, ‘put in work’ delivering a dance-pop bop.

8. Hozier, “Nobody’s Soldier”
Unaired (EP) // Rubyworks Ltd. / Columbia // 2024
“Honey, I’m taking no orders / Gonna be nobody’s soldier.” Grammy-nominated Irish singer/songwriter Hozier (Andrew Hozier-Byrne) strikes gold once more with “Nobody’s Soldier”, the opening track of his Unaired (EP). Hozier-Byrne penned it alongside a team comprising Chakra (Daniel Krieger), Bēkon (Daniel Tannenbaum), Pete G (Peter Gonzales), Sergiu Gherman, and Stuart Johnson. Bēkon, Chakra, Gherman, and Pete G produced as well. “Nobody’s Soldier” commences with a bombastic instrumental introduction. The chromatic lines are one of the biggest selling points. The riffs used throughout are ear-catching. The instrumental, with its colorful timbre and rhythmic nature, ‘kicks ass and takes names.’ Hozier has ‘pure illness’ to sing over. His falsetto, which occurs during the verses is ‘to die for.’ At the end of the first verse, he’s “Living the dream / Benzos and gasoline / Coffee and blue light screens till the morning.” The lyrics remain intriguing in the second verse: “The paint on the walls / Come down like a waterfall / The goal I was aiming for was the wrong one.” He doesn’t remain in falsetto, of course. He shows off that powerful chest voice too! He’s back in the chest by the pre-chorus: “If I tell you this is drowning / You tell me I’m walking on water.” He brings the heat on the infectious, tuneful chorus:
“Choose between being a salesman or a soldier
Just let me look a little older
Let me step a little bolder
Choose between being a butcher or a pauper
Honey, I’m taking no orders
Gonna be nobody’s soldier.”
Ooh-wee! Welcome contrast arrives during the bridge section, further upping the ante on this song. “Nobody’s Soldier” marks another high point for the Irishman who’s had a terrific 2024. It excels thanks to top-notch songwriting (anti-war vibes), vocals, and production.

9. Mary J. Blige, “Breathing” (Ft. Fabolous)
“Breathing” // 300 Entertainment / Mary Jane Productions // 2024
“I think to myself, ‘Is this real or can I be dreamin’?’ / I think I’m in love.” Two-time Academy Award-nominated and Grammy-winning actress/singer Mary J. Blige dropped a new single in August 2024, “Breathing”! On “Breathing,” she collaborated with veteran rapper, Fabolous. Blige, Fabolous, Screamin’ Jay Hawkins, Jocelyn Donald, and Jose Leonel Sandoval penned “Breathing.” Shaun “S. Dot” Thomas produced. Hawkins’ frightening 1956 classic, “I Put A Spell On You”, is sampled and integrated brilliantly into “Breathing.” Thomas adds a sick, rhythmic beat, giving “Breathing” a hip-hop/hip-hop soul vibe, which suits both Loso and Mary. The bass line is a win, too. Fabolous is the first voice heard in the record, confidently rapping the first verse. “Haters see me coming through, gotta shut their mouth now (Shh) / They huff, and they puff, but they couldn’t blow this house down.” Blige enters post-Loso, singing authentically and soulfully about L-O-V-E. “Those things you do to me / Leaves a lasting impression on my heart,” she sings in the verse, adding, “There ain’t no second best / I’ve had my wasted times, but no regrets.” In the chorus, she tells him, “Since we’ve been together, I’ve been countin’ seconds with you /…And I’m inhalin’ deep, boy, I am breathing / You’re so much better for me, oh.” The melodies are tuneful. Upping the ante for MJB are lovely, harmonized vocals. “Breathing” is a win.

10. Gucci Mane, “Rich Niggaz”
Greatest Of All Trappers – Gangsta Grillz Edition // 1017 Global Music, LLC / Atlantic // 2024
Gucci Mane (Radric Davis) dropped a surefire banger on his album, Greatest Of All Trappers – Gangsta Grillz Edition with “Rich Niggaz”. This four-minute-plus cut BANGS. Davis penned “Rich Niggaz” alongside producer extraordinaire, Zaytoven (Xavier Dotson). The synths are tasteful – served up in a spare fashion. Still, “Rich Niggaz” is firmly planted in a dark, malicious minor key, and the beat hits hard. Gucci rides the anchoring, knocking beat like a champ, flaunting his easy-going, potent cadence and flow. He’s confident and energetic without breaking a sweat. “I’m a rich nigga, dog, so I ain’t beefin’ ‘bout hoes (Nah) / I ain’t talkin’ to you, baby, ‘less you bookin’ ten shows.” Word. In the second verse, he drops an ‘educated’ lyrical gem: “Got a fetish fuckin’ teachers, all my hoes got class.” The chorus is where Gucci’s bread is its most buttery!
“I’m a rich nigga, dog (Huh?), I’m a rich nigga, dog (Yeah), you a rich nigga just like me (Huh?)
I’m a rich nigga, dog (Huh?), I’m a rich nigga, dog, no industry, I run these streets (Huh?).”
There is nothing deep about “Rich Niggaz”. It’s merely a Southern rap banger that ‘kicks ass and takes names.’ Fittingly, Zaytoven lets the sick instrumental play on long after Gucci stops rapping.

11. Isabel LaRosa, “Pretty Boy”
“Pretty Boy” // Slumbo Labs / RCA // 2024
“I want your name forever / Behind mine.” Isabel LaRosa is thinking about marriage before she turns 20 years old! The Gen-Z, Cuban American pop musician has a “Pretty Boy” in mind. With the help of her older brother, Thomas LaRosa, they penned this boy-loving pop joint. Thomas, alongside Lucas Sim, produced it. Brief, just clocking past the two-minute mark, Isabel speaks her peace about this pretty boy. There’s trouble in relationship paradise, though… “Boy, I’m holding on for life…” The negativity is ‘negativing’ in the first verse: “Angry words… / Feel their worst… / When we try it one more time.” Hmm, can they successfully reunite? In the second verse, LaRosa remains perturbed, while singing with a breathy tone: “Watch me cry, drowning eyes / Are you running from the truth?” The chorus is the centerpiece, where Isabel implores him to be hers, again!
“Baby, be my pretty boy (Pretty boy, pretty boy)
I’m so obsessed, it’s not a choice (Not a choice, not a choice)
I’m melting when I hear your voice
I belong to you.”
Oh, snap, it’s serious! All told Isabel LaRosa drops a short but sweet pop bop with “Pretty Boy”. We buy what she’s selling. Besides her breathy, fierce, and indulgent vocals, the instrumental backdrop is sweet too. Set in a minor key, with dark, rhythmic vibes, “Pretty Boy” is the stuff.

12. Shawn Mendes, “Isn’t That Enough”
Shawn // Island // 2024
“Sweet is the sun / Warm is the rain / June is the month / Free is the day.” Word. The handsome and talented, Grammy-nominated Canadian singer/songwriter Shawn Mendes returned in 2024 with his fifth studio album, Shawn (arrives October 18, 2024). Shawn arrives nearly four years later, led by singles “Why Why Why” and “Isn’t That Enough”. “Isn’t That Enough” was penned by Mendes, Amy Allen, Ethan Gruska, Mike Sabath, Nate Mercereau, and Scott Harris. Mendes, Harris, Mercereau, and Sabath produced it. “Isn’t That Enough” has some country elements. This folksy song features guitar accompaniment as well as harmonica. The harmonica enhances the backdrop, adding character and color. Mendes sounds top-notch. His vocals are lovely, expressive, and sincere. He brings the tuneful melodies and poetic lyrics to life. Anxiety, uncertainty, and a whirlwind of emotions greatly affect him: “My hands still shakin’ / My mind’s still racin’ / My heart’s still breakin’ in two.” He urges his friends to remain patient with him – he needs time and support to get back together. Mendes gets a lift – musical support – thanks to beautiful vocal layering and harmonies. “Isn’t That Enough” features simple songwriting yet speaks volumes. Mendes’ transparency about ‘not being okay’ is admirable. You’re rooting for him to bounce back better and stronger than before. The song is stunning.

13. Ciara, “Run It Up” (Ft. BossMan Dlow)
“Run It Up” // Beauty Marks Entertainment, Inc. // 2024
“Drivin’ way too fast, I don’t see no one in front of me /… Run it up, run it up, run it up, run it up.” Woo! Grammy-winning R&B/hip-hop artist Ciara (Ciara Harris) brings the heat on “Run It Up”. She enlisted Florida rapper BossMan Dlow (Devante McCreary) to assist in the banger. The enjoyable song was written by Harris, McCreary, Courtlin Jabrae, and Theron Thomas. Harris, Jabrae, J. R. Rotem, and Andy D. Park produced. “Run It Up” is turned up from the beginning with the energetic instrumental intro and “ohs” sung by Ciara. Set in a minor key, it features a banging beat and malicious minor-key synths. Its rhythm is among the best features. Following the repetitive chorus highlighting the titular lyric “Run it Up,” BossMan Dlow drops the first verse. What makes it interesting is his unique flow. Lyrically, he doesn’t offer much depth, unless you consider the likes of, “You with a boss now, bae, let’s have sex on a yacht” to be deep. Ciara keeps it hella agile and rhythmic during the second verse. “No matter how many points I put up on the board / Just believe me, you know they gon’ hate,” she asserts, adding, “I’m in a league of my own, I’m a wife, I’m a mom / I go pick up my kids in a Wraith.” Word. She also drops a rad bridge: “Get back up when they knock you down /… You on a whole ‘nother level now.” All in all, “Run It Up” is a certified vibe.

14. Asbjørn, “Child of the City”
“Child of the City” // Body of Work // 2024
“And so, we woke up in the morning feeling like ghosts in our bodies / 21 grams lighter but the weight of planets on us.” One of many brilliant lyrics from the handsome, talented, and gracious, Asbjørn (Asbjørn Toftdahl Terkelsen). The self-described ‘Danish pop rebel’ describes “Child of the City”, as a ‘fast-paced piece of pop music with a villainous touch,’ and a ‘dizzying, clubby pop song featuring boys choir, me pounding a metal lampshade and a pinch of existential crisis.” Woo! The boys choir that Terkelsen mentions is his childhood boys choir, Skt. Clemens Drengekor. The choir adds angelic sounds to the breathtaking single penned by Asbjørn. He produced it with Steffen Lundtoft.
True to his characterization, “Child of the City” exemplifies the club sound. The unique, percussive intro marks one of the most impressive sounds from the single. The rhythm of the intro continues in all facets of the song. Vocally, Asbjørn brings the heat. He sounds lovely, flaunting his tone and some sweet falsetto moments. Even though he’s potent – locked in and loaded, baby – he maintains a calm, cool, and collected energy vocally. He never forces things or sounds as if he breaks a sweat. Still, Terkelsen packs a punch, convincingly singing the rhythmic, tuneful melodies. There is no shortage of intriguing lyrics, including “Gimme that veggie McD, Gen-Z in a millennial body / My boy algorithm-chic, pretty on my feed.” The chorus easily gets stuck in the head.
“You are a child of the city
Don’t know if you ever sleep at all
Yes, you are a child of the city, child of the city, child of the city.”
As “Child of the City” progresses it packs a bit more punch. Still, that ‘punch’ is sans growing overblown or overwrought – it feels just right. The ambient outro is unexpected but keeps the song intriguing. Once again, my boy, Asbjørn brings the heat on “Child of the City”.

15. Gregory Dillon & stanchris, Wet Dream
“Wet Dream” // Sad Magic // 2024
“Cum in my mind, like it’s a wet dream / Heaven inside, you gotta slip it right in me.” Ooh-wee, Gregory Dillon (Gregory Dillon Scherer) 😳 😈! The sex, or, the fantasy of the sex, is ripe on “Wet Dream”. But, when it’s a fantasy, particularly from an adolescent perspective, the sexual experience is vivid. Dillon captures that perfectly in the chorus, the crowning achievement of “Wet Dream.” Dillon penned “Wet Dream” with Madison May Zelmann. He produced it. Notably, he gets our favorite beloved twink, stanchris (Chris Stanley) 😍, to assist. But before the bear-loving Stanley enters the mix, Dillon takes the reins.
“Saturated eyes hoping for a dare / Like butterflies stabbing me with tongue tied knots,” Dillon sings in the first verse, concluding, “And then he’s begging me to come alone / I guess he can’t think straight while taking…” That’s where the cum comes into play 🤭 (his words, not mine). His voice is distinct – it’s the depth. As for stanchris, he drops some sexy bars on us: “Naked while you lie / So high in the backseat / Find a place to hide / Pull off on a back street.” It’s about to go down! Chris gets another moment to shine. By shine, he titillates: “Using my coat like a bedsheet / Will be discreet in the backseat / Fog up the glass when you touch me / Cum in my mind, it’s like a wet dream.” Indeed, indeed, INDEED! Besides the expressive, sexed-up pipes by both, the production and sound are lit. The electro-pop, synth-heavy vibes are synthing – if that’s even a word! Gregory and stanchris make a formidable duo on “Wet Dream”, PERIOD!
