On 5ive Songs, we (I) keep things short and sweet – no extra calories or needless fluff. There’s a topic, five songs, and a short blurb. Yes, it’s a playlist, but it’s a miniature playlist that shouldn’t take much time to consume. On this edition of 5ive Songs, we select five songs that are associated with BOOTS in some form or fashion.
1. Morgan Wallen, “Sand in My Boots”
💿 Dangerous: The Double Album • 🏷 Big Loud / Republic • 📅 2021
Wallen showcases his terrific instrument, singing with incredible expression and nuance. The songwriting is solid, particularly the centerpiece, the passionate chorus where he’s “Dodging potholes in my sunburnt Silverado / Like a heart-broke Desperado, headin’ right back to my roots.”
2. Kesha, “Boots”
💿 Rainbow • 🏷 Kemosabe • 📅 2017
With Rainbow ultimately being characterized as her most mature album, “Boots” manages to have similar oomph to her past work with a smidge more maturity.
3. Greyson Chance, “Boots”
🎵 “Boots” • 🏷 GCM / Arista • 📅 2019
“I’ve been western before all of these punks,” he sings, continuing, “These punks in California who think they can punch.” Later, he trades ‘punks’ for ‘stars,’ singing, “These stars in California who think that they are hard.” Of course, Chance couldn’t have a killer boot song without referencing 🎙 Nancy Sinatra: “Boots with the big heels, hot like I’m Nancy.” Don’t think Chance is totally ‘old fashioned’ either: “I’m smoking way too loud; I’m feeling good high now.” 420 Friendly he is.

4. Luke Bryan, “Knockin’ Boots”
💿 Born Here Live Here Die Here • 🏷 Capitol Nashville • 📅 2020
“Knockin’ Boots” isn’t the most traditional country cut, but also doesn’t force the modern pop hand. Bryan is able to incorporate the usual country clichés – his truck (“This truck needs a half tank / These wheels need a two-lane”), drinking (“Cheap drinks need a-slingin’”), and of course, ‘making love’ without crossing the line (“That dress needs to slip off” and “And backseats need I want you so bad”). The crème de la crème is the chorus, excerpted at the top in all its vanilla, sensual glory.

5. Myylo, “Doc Martens”
💿 I’m a Nice Boy (EP) • 🏷 Myylo • 📅 2019
One of the best parts of the song besides the aforementioned verse:
“Get him back him to my house Kiss him up in my bedroom Spilling all of our secrets Curled up on my pillows Make him bacon in the AM So, we don’t break up till the world end.”
