After spending nine weeks at no. 1, Drake has finally been dethroned from the top of the Billboard 200. No longer are Drake’s Views superior to rest. Blink-182 takes over the no. 1 spot with California. California marks Blink-182’s first new album in five years.
The odds were clearly in Blink’s favor as California moved 186,000 units. Of 186,000 units, a robust 92%+ were pure sales. Drake’s Views moved significantly less – 117,000 units. Even though Drake’s numbers are far off from Blink-182, they are also far off from Maxwell.
Maxwell’s awesome blackSUMMERS’night disappoints, landing at no. 3 and moving just 59,000 units. Maxwell’s last album, BLACKsummers’night, debuted at no. 1 with 316,000 copies sold! One thing that bodes well in Maxwell’s favor, most of those 59,000 units were pure sales (~97%). Clearly, Maxwell waited TOO long to release the second album of the trilogy.
Beyond dethroning Drake, the ascent of Blink-182, and a so-so performance by Maxwell, the remainder of the top-10 is boring. The names are familiar: Beyoncé (Lemonade), Twenty One Pilots (Blurryface), Rihanna (Anti), Adele (25) and Hamilton. The two oddities are Epic AF, which spends another week in the top 10 at no.9, and the rebound of Blake Shelton’s If I’m Honest at no. 10.
Who’s got next on the BB200? ScHoolboy Q should impact with highly anticipated Blank Face LP. The question is, how well does ScHoolboy Q sell? Oxymoron debuted at no. 1 back in 2014. Otherwise, the names should remain familiar near the top of the Billboard 200.
