South Korean girl group BLACKPINK deliver a total, infectious bop with the ultra-sleek “How You Like That.”
Unless you’re living under a rock – or just don’t keep up with the pulse of the music industry in recent years – you know that K-Pop has become a big deal in the U.S. BTS in particular have had ample success on the Billboard 200, scoring multiple no. 1 albums. Perhaps BLACKPINK can elevate a female K-Pop collective to the same level of chart success male groups have experienced stateside. After shining on bops like “Kill This Love” and “Sour Candy” (alongside Lady Gaga), the girls come back strong on “How You Like That.”
“How You Like That” is a BOP, period. It commences with an aggressive, dramatic sounding intro, which sets the tone superbly. Of course, beyond the initial ear candy, the production on “How You Like That” is nothing short of superb. Sleek, ear-catching, and near-perfect, as has been the case consistently, K-Pop backdrops are always on-point. Beyond the marvelous sounds, BLACKPINK, as a whole, deliver powerful vocals that cut through and pop right out of the production. Honestly, I live for the energy and sass these girls bring to the table.
Even with lyrics that are in Korean, the energy and the vibe definitely help to bridge the language barrier. Like a movie with subtitles, listening to “How You Like That,” you definitely don’t feel as if the difference in language is a big deal. If nothing else, the chorus and post-chorus sections are EVERYTHING. Furthermore, the bridge section brings excellent contrast, which segues into an outro – a breakdown section – for the ages.
Final Thoughts
If I haven’t already made it clear, “How You Like That” is a total BOP by BLACKPINK. Why is it such a resounding success? Superb production and overall vibe, awesome, high-flying vocals, and an infectious, irresistible chorus. Again, hopefully, these girls can gain some serious traction stateside.
