Matthew Musto, better known as blackbear, has had a big year – understatement.  His biggest claim to fame in 2017 is his hit single, “do re mi,” but it doesn’t stop there. He dropped a joint project with his bud, Mike Posner (Mansionz) as well as the parent album for his hit single, digital druglord.  If he’s a bit cocky, it’s understandable, right? For the third week in a row, he drops a new song. After releasing “playboy shit” and “Black Pink Tims,” blackbear returns with “Up in This,” featuring Tinashé.

“Up in This” opens darkly, menacingly, and mysteriously.  Tinashe matches the opening production work, kicking the lyrics off with hard-hitting, unapologetic vocals on the chorus.  Her tone is marvelous – sexy, yet ready to ‘cut a trick.’

“Shawty got a booty, let it hang out (hang out) / Ain’t no turnin’ down, let it bang out (bang out) / She ain’t going home, she wanna hang out (yeah) / We up in this bitch, oh / Got the club feeling like a safe house / All this damn money, let it rain down / We ain’t going home, we wanna hang out / We up in this bitch.”

Blackbear follows, with his signature, distinct vocals, chocked full of game and swagger, not to mention effects.  He paints the malicious backdrop like a boss, even if he doesn’t offer much substance. Notably, on his second verse, he sounds turned-up to the nth degree, rapping aggressively. Throughout his performance, the swears continue to fly.  What’s new?

Final Thoughts

If the listener gets nothing more out of “Up in This,” they learn that both Blackbear and Tinashe are “up in this bitch now.” Basically, like the two singles that precede it, blackbear is flexing his butt off.  This isn’t game-changing, just flex action.  It is what it is.
