3.5 out of 5 stars

Matthew Musto, better known as blackbear, has had a big year – understatement.  His biggest claim to fame in 2017 is his hit single, “do re mi,” but it doesn’t stop there. He dropped a joint project with his bud, Mike Posner (Mansionz) as well as the parent album for his hit single, digital druglord.  If he’s a bit cocky, it’s understandable, right? That’s the case on his new single, “playboy shit,” featuring lil aaron.

“Playboy shit” is a total flex-fest. These are common in urban music, for better or for worse.  Cliché, “Playboy shit” celebrates ‘the come up.’ This is clear from the exuberant sound, and the confident hook.

“Woke up rich, real bad bitch / Playboy shit, that’s some playboy shit / I’ve been going in, shout out to my wrist / Playboy shit, that’s playboy shit.”

Blackbear doesn’t accomplish anything profound here, he just flexes his newfound status.  He’s become a star, and stars are supposed to act like stars…

“You can’t keep up with me, I be going hard, yeah / Need a couple M’s before we talk, yeah / I started out with nothing, now I’m bossed up / That’s some playboy shit right there.”

All of that is stated before the verse. On the verse, expectedly, blackbear talks trash, bragging about his awesomeness, including the obligatory sex joke/reference.  Again, nothing new, but definitely chocked-full of game.  lil aaron gets in on the action on the second verse.  Like blackbear, he brags about his money, but his argument falls a bit flatter – he hasn’t ‘broke through’ yet… Just saying.

Final Thoughts

All in all, “playboy shit” gives blackbear another potential hit.  In reiteration, it’s not deep, but it’s certainly enjoyable.  It has the normal characteristics of a blackbear song – profane, well-produced, and catchy chorus.
