Blackbear and Machine Gun Kelly have some choice words for their monstrous exes on their unapologetic collaboration, “gfy.”
If you’ve never noticed, 🎙 blackbear tends to incorporate a degree of pessimism into his music. Oftentimes, that pessimism involves a girl that has screwed him over. Honestly, it makes for an entertaining listen, even if blackbear is less than enthused. Once again, he’s back with ample pessimism on 🎵 “gfy”, an advanced single from 💿 in loving memory (arrives August 26, 2022). Hopefully, it didn’t require too much effort to figure out what “gfy” stands for – wait for it – go fuck yourself. Ooh, wee, blackbear! Besides bringing the f-bomb and other profane words, the singer also brings along 🎙 Machine Gun Kelly. So, is it a bromance made in heaven, or a bromance made in hell?
“Gfy” is a bit tough to label. There are elements of pop, hip-hop, and of course, pop-punk. Basically, it sits somewhere under the alternative umbrella of music. Early on, it feels more pop with some hip-hop stylings. Blackbear is locked in and loaded from the start. After the intro reveals the deck of cards (“There’s three little words that I should’ve said / Go fuck yourself”), he recounts his bad experience with his ex. It’s so bad, blackbear asserts, “You’re worse than all of my exes combined.” Woo! Machine Gun Kelly enters the mix following the chorus, contributing to some “ooh’s” before dropping his own punk-pop/rap hybrid verse. One of the lines that stands out from MGK: “Do not disturb on the door while she screamin’ / My D-I-C-K B.I.G. like Notorious.” Wow… speechless! The big takeaway is, that this girl/these girls was awful, and both regret not telling them to “go fuck yourself.”
Final Thoughts 💭
If nothing else, 🎵 “gfy” is entertaining. It embodies the spirit of pop-punk and both blackbear and Machine Gun Kelly are true to themselves. Is it an elite joint? I wouldn’t say so, honestly. This is kind of the lane both these artists reside in so, it’s not markedly different from what we’re accustomed to. Energetic and enjoyable, but not the second coming.
