blackbear, cybersex © interscopeblackbear proves he has more artistic range than perceived on the acoustic “g2g ttyl,” the sixth teaser track from ‘cybersex.’ THEY. provides the assist.

Matthew Musto, better known as blackbear, has had a big year – understatement.  His biggest claim to fame in 2017 is his hit single, “do re mi,” but it doesn’t stop there. He dropped a joint project with his bud, Mike Posner (Mansionz) as well as the parent album for his hit single, digital druglord.  If he’s a bit cocky, it’s understandable, right? Blackbear returns sooner than later with a new project, cybersex, arriving on Monday, November 27, 2017.  Ahead of cybersex, he’s released numerous singles, including “g2g ttyl” featuring THEY.

“g2g ttyl” marks the sixth teaser track that blackbear has released in advance of cybersex and the 12th song on the project. Just crossing the three-minute mark, it’s short and sweet.  Compared to the other singles arriving pre-cybersex, it’s starkly different – it’s acoustic as opposed to being stuffed with synthesizers and hard-hitting trap-oriented beats. Is this a disadvantage for blackbear? Nah.

While his voice is an acquired taste, particularly on a ‘ballad’ of sorts, the listener gets the sense that there’s ‘more than meets the eye.’ Clearly, blackbear is a profane musician who has something of a badass façade, but hearing him ‘stripped down’ here in some respects changes that perception.

“Away from Hollywood girls in the valley / I know that all ‘em tweets you posting is about me / I got to go, oh, oh-oh / I’ll stay out of Cali for a while / I’ll stay out of Cali for a while / I’ll stay out of Cali for a while.”

As for THEY., he arrives for the second verse, providing a welcome contrast to blackbear.

Final Thoughts

Once more, blackbear delivers another worthwhile, respectable song from cybersex.  “g2g ttyl” isn’t my personal favorite or the most exciting, but it does show that the artist has more up his sleeves than explicit, hard-nosed, hard-hitting records. All in all, “g2g ttyl” builds more anticipation for the mixtape.
