The vibes, the vibes, those Throwback Vibez ๐Ÿ•ถ๏ธ๐ŸŽถ! Throwback Vibez ๐Ÿ•ถ๏ธ๐ŸŽถ is a column that celebrates awesome songs from the past.  The records that grace this column are older, but that doesnโ€™t necessarily mean that theyโ€™re ancient โ€“ no fossils ๐Ÿฆด! All genres of music are welcome. In the 155th edition of Throwback Vibez ๐Ÿ•ถ๏ธ๐ŸŽถ (2023), we recollect and reflect on ๐ŸŽต โ€œWar with Godโ€, performed by ๐ŸŽ™ Billy Paul

Billy Paul, War of the Gods [๐Ÿ“ท: Sony Music Entertainment]โ€œThe time has come, for bad things to end / The time has come for life to begin / The time has come for the war of the gods.โ€ ๐ŸŽต โ€œWar with Godโ€ ranks among the best songs from ๐ŸŽ™ Ludacrisโ€™ 2006, ๐Ÿ† Grammy-winning rap album ๐Ÿ’ฟ Release Therapy.  Why am I mentioning the southern rapper? Because his song served as my introduction to the ๐ŸŽ™ Billy Paul soul classic, ๐ŸŽต โ€œWar of the Godsโ€, which it samples. โ€œWar of the Gods,โ€ the second track from ๐Ÿ’ฟ War of the Gods (1973), in its entirety, runs north of 10 minutes in duration.  The music is utterly sublime.  Worth noting, a condensed, five-and-a-half-minute version, ๐ŸŽต โ€œWar of the Gods (Part 1)โ€, appears as the seventh track.

On โ€œWar of the Gods,โ€ Billy Paul reflects on the evil of the world. He makes it clear that Lucifer is NOT good, PERIOD! โ€œLucifer, oh Lucifer / God of evil, youโ€™re the god of hate,โ€ he sings, continuing,  โ€œWe see you every day / Father of the lie / You made man die / Where the light shines / You run and hide.โ€ Clearly, the world is running amok with hatred and toxicity.  Men and women show themselves to be devilish ๐Ÿ˜ˆ! Despite all the hell unleashed by Satan, Paul paints a portrait where โ€œWar of the Godsโ€ will be won by God โ€“ good > evil, baby! โ€œYou know love conquers all,โ€ he sings, continuing, โ€œWill you stand, will you stand / Or will you fall.โ€ In addition to the thought provoking theme and lyrics, ๐ŸŽ› Kenneth Gamble and Leon Huff construct an epic backdrop during the heart of that incredibly lush, Philly soul era in the 1970s.  ๐ŸŽต โ€œMe and Mrs. Jonesโ€ will always be the song to beat, but  ๐ŸŽต โ€œWar of the Godsโ€ is marvelous, marvelous, marvelous!
