Bille Eilish, "my future" [Photo Credits: Darkroom / Interscope]Billie Eilish returns with “my future,” a single that serves up familiarity as well as a couple new wrinkles from the wunderkind.

Cutting straight to the chase, anytime Billie Eilish releases new music, it’s a big deal.  That proves to be the case with “my future,” her second single of 2020.  While Eilish continues to take the subtle approach when it comes to her vocal performance, one thing that’s different about “my future” is the fact that there’s more optimism compared to her music of the past..

Billie Eilish is the type of singer that has a hypnotic quality about her performance – you are drawn into every lyric and every note she sings.  That’s the case here on “my future,” particularly the first half of the song which is slow and quite indulgent.  Indulgence isn’t a bad thing – Lana del Rey brings that sort of approach and vibe quite often, with great success.  Here, Eilish shows her ability to deliver balladry without gospel histrionics or breaking a sweat.  Again, it’s subtle, but it’s quite beautiful and highly successful.  As always, her bro, FINNEAS, has her back, with marvelous production work.

Perhaps the biggest surprise when it comes to “my future,” beyond the optimism (“‘Cause I’m in love / with my future / Can’t wait to meet her…”) is a change of pace.  Had Billie Eilish kept going with balladry, “no future” would’ve still been a winner.  The contrast, adding a sick groove and picking up the tempo, was very thoughtful and unexpected ultimately.

Final Thoughts

I get it – not everybody’s ‘all-in’ on Billie Eilish.  Personally, even as that guy who loves powerhouse musicians who can tear the roof off, I like Eilish’s cool, calm and collected vibes.  While she doesn’t change her vocal style on “no future,” the contrast from ballad to groovy, smooth as silk pop joint is a nice ‘evolution’ of sorts, even if it isn’t a ‘game changing’ adjustment.  Honestly, “my future” is another winner from this talented teen, period. I’m onboard.
