“Everybody knows / You and I are suicide and stolen art.”  Word.  Shock value can be a great promo tool for a rising artist. In the case of Billie Eilish, she catches eyes with her boldly titled single, “Bitches Broken Hearts.” Profanity is part of the pop music game these days, but still, there’s some shock when the b-word graces the song title. Fortunately, for Eilish, the song isn’t quite as brash as the title might suggest.

Well, “Bitches Broken Hearts” has a couple of lines that are ‘punchy,’ such as “Pretty mama sews / Stitches into all your bitches broken hearts.” What’s the theme of the record? Billie is brokenhearted, and she ultimately wants to believe, or wants her ex- to admit, he misses her.  Interestingly, the heartbrokenness is captured via cool, minimalist production.

Billie Eilish matches the simplicity of the production with her own cool, restrained brand of vocals. While holding back can be boring at times – and in certain artist’s hands – Eilish makes her performance worthwhile.  She has a beautiful instrument, which complements the simple, yet impactful backdrop soundly. The centerpiece of the record is the chorus, which arrives at the jump.

“You can pretend you don’t miss me

You can pretend you don’t care

All you wanna do is kiss me

Oh, what a shame, I’m not there.”

Final Thoughts

All in all, the 16-year old alternative pop artist shines on “Bitches Broken Hearts.” Solid vocals, beautiful backdrop, and a relatable theme.  Furthermore, the chorus, albeit it simple, is memorable and highly effective. Looks like this teen has a promising career ahead of her.
