Scanning the Charts – Billboard 200 & Billboard Hot 100 (9/19/20) – Big Sean debuts at no. 1 on the Billboard 200 with Detroit 2.
SCANNING THE CHARTS is just what it says it is. I, the quirky founder and do-it-all at The Musical Hype scans through the Billboard Charts and picks out things that catch my eye. To reiterate what I said last week (Taylor Swift & BTS Hold Serve), this column won’t be extensive, but rather short and sweet, keeping that 💩 moving. This week, I picked out five notable observations from the Billboard 200, and five observations from the Billboard Hot 100, with Big Sean debuting at no. 1 the Billboard 200 . Check out my takeaways!
Billboard 200
💭 Big Sean dethrones the queen – Taylor Swift that is! Following six consecutive weeks at no. 1, Taylor Swift sees her eighth studio album, folklore, fall to no. 5. Detroit 2 easily tops the charts.
💭 No change at no. 2 or no. 3. Pop Smoke (Shoot for the Stars Aim for the Moon) and Juice WRLD (Legends Never Die) continue to dominate both spots.
💭 6ix9ine was probably banking on a no. 1 debut. Unfortunately for him, TattleTales settles for no. 4. He did beat Taylor Swift (folklore) though… in her seventh week on the chart that is!
💭 With Big Sean and 6ix9ine being the only newbies in the top 10, we look elsewhere on the chart for more debuts and reentries. There are two notable happenings in the top-20 with Ozuna launching at no. 17 with ENOC, and The Rolling Stones reentering the chat at no. 19 with the reissued Goats Head Soup.
💭 More chart happenings? HARDY bows at no. 24 with A Rock. Dua Lipa reenters with Future Nostalgia at no. 38 (who the bleep let her fall out in the first place). Christian metal collective Stryper launches at no. 92 with Even the Devil Believes. Honestly, that’s about the size of it…
Billboard Hot 100
💭 Honestly, I thought it would happen one week sooner but Cardi B and Megan Thee Stallion reclaim the Hot 100 throne with “WAP”.
💭 After two consecutive weeks at no. 1, BTS slips to no. 2 with their first English-exclusive single, “Dynamite”.
💭 DJ Khaled and Drake reenter the top 10 with “Popstar”, ascending from no. 24 to no. 10. Worth noting, the music video stars Justin Bieber.
💭 SZA debuts at no. 29 with “Hit Different” featuring Ty Dolla $ign.
💭 Expectedly, a number of Big Sean singles debut on the Hot 100. Notably, his excellent promo single “Deep Reverence”, featuring the late great Nipsey Hussle, debuts at no. 82.
