Following a quiet 2016, Big Sean returns in 2017 with his fourth studio album, I Decided.  Ahead of I Decided, the Detroit MC has been dropping tracks, including “Bounce Back” and now, “Moves.” Expectedly, Sean doesn’t hold his tongue on “Moves,” exuding the utmost confidence.

“Moves” features minimalist, dark sounding production.  A recurring synth is audible, but the booming 808s drums dominate.  This seems intentional, with the focal point of “Moves” being the confident rhymes from Big Sean.  Indeed, Big Sean is on, opening the joint with sex on the brain: “Sex game had her ass blowing me up.”  Charming. After the intro, his confidence doesn’t fade – it only expands on the hook.  Expectedly, the hook is the crème de la crème of the brief joint.

“I got the moves
I got the moves
I’m making moves
You gotta move
She make the back move
She made her titties move
I make the city move
I make the city move.”

On the verse, Sean doesn’t hold back, bragging about his status in the game. He throws a mean punch when he states:

“Got a little time and a lot of talent
Do a little talking and a lot of action
Seen the competition, hmm, not a challenge.”

That’s not the only moves he makes.  After citing a number of famous film directors (including Tarantino), Sean asserts: “Motherfuck the whole industry / Half of these niggas my mini-me’s.”

Final Thoughts

All in all, “Moves” is another respectable record from Big Sean. Like many of Sean’s records, it has oomph – packs a punch.  It’s not the second coming by any means, but sound.  Compared to the big hits off of Dark Sky Paradise, Moves” – “Blessings” or “I Don’t Fuck Wit You” come to mind – “Moves” is lukewarm at best.  Still, it’s by no means ice cold, which is a pro.
