Welcome to 5ive Songs, where we keep things short and sweet – no extra calories or needless fluff! There’s a theme/topic, five songs, and a short blurb.  Yes, it’s a playlist, but it’s a miniature playlist that shouldn’t take much time to consume.  In the 74th edition of 5ive Songs (2022), we select five songs that are associated with BIG in some form or fashion.  Okay, let’s get into it!

1. BROCKHAMPTON, “Big Pussy”

💿 THE FAMILY🏷 Question Everything, Inc. / RCA • 🗓 2022

BROCKHAMPTON, THE FAMILY [📷: Question Everything, Inc. / RCA]“This shit a classic, ain’t even been out a week.” Woo! Now that’s sheer confidence, 🎙 Kevin Abstract!  Abstract takes the reins on 🎵 “Big Pussy” (meow!), the promo single from the final 🎙 BROCKHAMPTON album, 💿 THE FAMILY.  By taking the reins, I mean that only Abstract performs on the single. 🎛 Nick Velez and 🎛 bearface produce this wild as f#¢k track.

The most prominent sample from “Big Pussy” is 🎵 “Hustlin’” by 🎙 Smoothe da Hustler.  That said, the intro of the record samples a punk record, introducing the titular lyric: “Fuck you / Fuck you, come up here then / Oh, wow, big pussy.”  Beyond that, “Big Pussy” gets weird quickly, with a blend of punk, jazzy, and old-school hip-hop vibes.  Kevin Abstract keeps the same energy with two unapologetic, gives no flying f#¢ks verses. It’s worth noting that both verses have two entirely different backdrops, adding to the uniqueness of this joint.  Some of the highlights include Abstract confirming the final studio album (“The group is over without being on the album”), fulfilling recording expectations (“the label needed thirty-five minutes of music”), and, for the millionth time, affirming he’s a proud gay, black rapper (“It’s the true shit, faggot nigga out of Houston”). It doesn’t stop there, of course, but one gets the most out of “Big Pussy” by listening and experiencing it for yourself.  While “Big Pussy” is left field to the nth degree,  I appreciate the ambition, as well as Kevin, being true to himself – not giving a fizzuck.

2. Latto, “Big Energy”

💿 777 🏷 Streamcut / RCA 📅 2022

Latto, 777 [📷: Streamcut / RCA]“Bad bitch, I could be your fantasy (Yeah) / I can tell you got big dick energy (Uh-huh).” Oh, $hi†! 🎙 Latto! There’s no doubt in the least that there’s ample energy on 🎵 “Big Energy”, a breakout record for the rapper.  Released in 2021, “Big Energy” ultimately appeared on her 2022 album, 💿 777.  So, how much energy did this BDE-heavy track have on the charts? Well, “Big Energy” peaked at no. 3 on the Billboard Hot 100. It also spent a total of 51 weeks on the chart, which is huge, and we know SIZE MATTERS!

Featuring bold, sexual, and unapologetic lyrics, “Big Energy” has no shortage of personality.  Besides the lyrics (“I’ma bust it on a pole like Onyx (Ooh) / I’m just bein’ honest (Uh-huh) / Pussy juicy, Minute Maid (Oh) / But can’t do it one minute, man (Hell no)”), one thing that also can’t be failed to mention is the samples.  The big inspiration is 🎵 “Genius of Love” courtesy of 🎙 Tom Tom Club.  Also, how about a little 🎙 Mariah Carey featuring 🎙 Ol’ Dirty Bastard with 🎵 “Fantasy (Bad Boy Fantasy)”.  With such awesome ingredients – the lyrics, samples, production, personality, rhymes, and of course, big dick energy – it’s unsurprising that “Big Energy” was the hit and surefire bop.   The chorus, of course, is the BIGGEST attraction, excerpted at the top and seen below in its ROBUST entirety:

“Bad bitch, I could be your fantasy (Yeah)

I can tell you got big dick energy (Uh-huh)

It ain’t too many niggas that can handle me (Yeah)

But I might let you try it off the Hennessy (Uh)

Make ‘em sing to this pussy like a melody (Make ’em sang)

And if your bitch ain’t right, I got the remedy (Ooh)

It ain’t too many niggas that can handle me (Ayy)

Bad bitch, I could be your fantasy (Ayy, ayy).”

3. Arctic Monkeys, “Big Ideas”

💿 The Car🏷 Domino • 📅 2022

Arctic Monkeys, The Car [📷: Domino]“I’ve conjured up wonderful things / The ballad of what could’ve been / Over and out / It’s been a thrill.”  Um, sure, 🎙 Artic Monkeys, if you say so… 🎵 “Big Ideas” is set in a minor key.  Interestingly, it’s in the same key as the song that precedes it on The Arctic Monkeys’ seventh studio album, 💿 The Car (🎵 “The Car”).  As always, that 🎙 Alex Turner – well –  he’s something! “Big Ideas,” which has no shortage of big ideas,  features a sweet chorus, which is comprised of warm, lush strings.

“I had big ideas, the band were so excited

The kind you’d rather not share over the phone

But now, the orchestra’s got us all surrounded

And I cannot for the life of me remember how they go.”

The orchestration is superbly executed.  In the context of The Car, the chorus of “Big Ideas” marks one of the more accessible choruses of the album. One timbre that stands out is the combination of dirty guitars and smoother strings. Sigh, that’s one big musical idea that excels!

4. Taylor Swift, “Bigger Than the Whole Sky”

💿 Midnights 🏷 Taylor Swift 📅 2022

Taylor Swift, Midnights [📷: Taylor Swift]“Every single thing I touch becomes sick with sadness / ‘Cause it’s all over now, all out to sea.” Those poetic lyrics hail from the master herself, the ubiquitous, 🏆 Grammy-winning, superstar, 🎙 Taylor Swift. In the expanded, 3 am Edition of 💿 Midnights, her tenth studio album, she adds a surefire gem in 🎵 “Bigger Than the Whole Sky.” In the second verse, she echoes a similar sentiment as she sings, “Every single thing to come has turned into ashes / ‘Cause it’s all over, it’s not meant to be.

The relationship has ended, and Taylor Swift is sad. He was bigger than the whole sky, sigh. Wow – that is quite the characterization, TS. The chorus, where this bigger-than-the-whole-sky mentality occurs, is by far the biggest attraction:

“Goodbye, goodbye, goodbye
You were bigger than the whole sky
You were more than just a short time
And I’ve got a lot to pine about
I’ve got a lot to live without
I’m never gonna meet
What could’ve been, would’ve been
What should’ve been you
What could’ve been, would’ve been you.”

If you purchased the 3 am Edition of Swift’s 💿 Midnights, this highlight alone makes it worth the extra money.

5. Da Vinci’s Notebook, “Enormous Penis”

💿 Brontosaurus🏷 Uncle Buford 📅 2002

Da Vinci's Notebook, Brontosaurus [📷: Uncle Buford]Nearly two decades before 🎙 Latto rapped about big dick energy in her infectious hit, 🎵 “Big Energy”, 🎙 Da Vinci’s Notebook had already sung about it. That’s right, on their 2002 album, 💿 Brontosaurus, listeners are privy to an 🎵 “Enormous Penis” – WOO! The difference between these two big-D joints is one is sexual and the other is not. As exciting as it would be if “Enormous Penis” was focused on pleasure, that’s not what Da Vinci’s Notebook are getting at on this acapella track.

“If you ever get so low that you don’t know which way to go / Come on and take a walk in my shoes.” Oh, really? Please expound Da Vinci’s Notebook. Well, per the collective, “The cure for all of my blues” is – drum roll, please – an enormous penis, of course!  Exhibit A, the centerpiece – the chorus:

“I take a look at my enormous penis
And my troubles start a-meltin’ away (Ba-doo-bop-bop)
I take a look at my enormous penis
And the happy times are coming to stay
I gotta sing and I dance when I glance in my pants
And the feeling’s like a sunshiney day
I take a look at my enormous pe-e-e-nis
And everything is goin’ my way (Ba-doo-bop-bop).”

Honestly, is there anymore that needs to be said? A man with an enormous penis is a god… well, something like that. This song about “my trouser monster” is a certified classic – a must-hear for men worldwide! #BDE!
