In age where there aren’t enough ‘musical refreshments,’ rising Dutch musician Sam Beekwilder just might be the fix. Better known by his unique last name Beekwilder, he first came across my radar appearing on the quirky, hella infectious 2018 Matty Noyes single, “Lava Lamps.” What stood out about the musician, who’s in his early twenties, is his energy and his distinct, exuberant voice.  That also stands out on what is sure to be one of the quirkier singles you’ll hear in 2019, “Fridge Broke.”

“Fridge Broke,” classified as a hip-hop record (take your pick of genre honestly) is ‘one of a kind.’ It starts with the production work, which has some ‘alternative,’ extraterrestrial qualities, while thriving off an undeniably sick groove.  In other words, it’s bizarre, yet also hella enticing. After examining the production, look no further than the handsome, young Dutch musician himself.  Like “Lava Lamps,” he brings high-energy to the table, and a unique, cutting voice.  There’s a hip-hop sensibility, but Beekwilder also sings, which may be his best attribute.  The high-pitched nature utterly distinct, and his falsetto is potent AF.

What about the song itself?  Where the hell did Beekwilder come up with “Fridge Broke?” Per his official website, specifically the press release centered around “Fridge Broke,” it’s the product of broken A/C in the Los Angeles recording studio, and tripping off shrooms.  In the same press release, penned by the Dutchman, he asserts, “The result is ‘Fridge Broke,’ a trip and a party anthem that’s grown to be my personal favorite.  It sounds like, refrigerator music?” Well, it definitely sounds like he was tripping off shrooms.

Final Thoughts

All in all, “Fridge Broke” is a trip… literally.  Although it’s off-putting, it’s also quite intriguing – it has that draw that makes you keep coming back to it.  Perhaps it’s not the next Billboard Hot 100 hit, but, Beekwilder definitely has the potential to be special in the game.
